Perhaps the terrorists will defeat us by forcing us to spend our inheritance?

In all the discussions I listen to and read regarding the war in Iraq, rarely do I ever come across one that seriously discusses the cost of the war. Yes, we all know that we’ve lost 4,000 of our sons and daugthers, and that by itself is more than enough tragedy for a nation to deal with. As if that loss wasn’t devastating enough, get this: the war in Iraq will end up costing American taxpayers $2 trillion. In the immortal words of the bard Kenny Mayne, “That’s like a record or something.”

I don’t know about you, but $2 trillion is a sum that defies normal comprehension…and yes, it’s a $#!tload of money. Let’s think for a moment about how that money could have been put to more effective use, shall we? How much of that could have been used for additional teacher training (and raises for them while we’re at it)? How much of that could have been used to fix our broken health care system? To rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast? To turn Medicare into something that actually works for seniors? To research alternative energy sources? To reduce our dependency on foreign oil? Yeah, I could go on, but you get the point, right? Anyone who feels that this has been $2 trillion well spent really ought to remove their anterior from their posterior.

So much American blood and treasure has been wasted on a war that has NOTHING to do with the war on terrorism. It did, however, create the very terrorist threat in Iraq that Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © insists we must fight to the death. The waste of our tax dollars and the live of brave young Americans- as well as those who returned maimed and/or psychologically damaged, in some cases permanently- should be considered inexcusable, if not criminal. Yet, Congressional Democratic leaders are united in their insistence that impeachment is not on the table.

Hey, if a President can be impeached for getting his helmet polished by a zaftig intern, what about one who lies and propagandizes his way into an immoral war that’s cost America so much blood and treasure? Don’t you think that if the President responsible for this had been a Democrat that he’d have long since been ridden out of Washington on a rail? Would that Congressional Democrats actually possessed a working set of cojones between them.

Congratulations, America; you’ve got exactly the quality of leadership you deserve.
