So, God really is a Republican?

Man, I’d heard that God works in mysterious ways, but I had NO idea that he could bend the New York Times to His will so easily. John McCain, who had seemed to have clear sailing ahead of him to the Republican nomination is now having to defend himself against allegations that he dipped his pen in lobbyist in…and supporters of Mike Huckabee are beside themselves with glee. Some are even going so far as to refer to McCain’s alleged zipper problem as the “Huckabee miracle”, as if the Lord’s righteous judgement is vindicating their chosen candidate. Others believe that “God is in control”, and that ultimately, the wise and righteous Mike Huckabee will rise above the fray and be anointed by God as the leader destined to lead this country to a more Godly place. Right…and I’ll be moving to Iceland….

What is it about the Religious Right that allows them to believe with all seriousness that God is on their side? That God, while he may not be a registered Republican, certainly smiles on Dominionist Theocrats who dream of trashing the Constitution and instituting Sharia Biblical law as the law of the land? And guess who gets to be the ones interpreting God’s law? I know; what a shock, eh?

Mike Huckabee is merely the glib, articulate head of a movement that cares less about God’s law than they do about their own power and self-aggrandizement. That these folks are arrogant enough to believe that God is on their side only serves to demonstrate their over-abundance of hubris and self-righteousness.

Here’s a news flash, y’all…. I think God has bigger things on his plate than ensuring that the Christian version of Sharia becomes the law of land. God is neither a Republican nor a Democrat. We can no more knowingly make that claim than we can know whether or not Roger Clemens is telling the truth. The intolerance and arrogance evidenced by the Religious Right’s claim to having the imprimatur of the Almighty only demonstrates what’s been blindingly obvious for years. The maroons wouldn’t recognize the teachings of Jesus Christ is the Gospel walked up and bit them on the ass.

The Religious Right is neither….
