Deja vu all over again

A video taken inside a secret Syrian facility last summer convinced the Israeli government and the Bush administration that North Korea was helping to construct a reactor similar to one that produces plutonium for North Korea's nuclear arsenal, according to senior U.S. officials who said it would be shared with lawmakers today. The officials said the video of the remote site, code-named Al Kibar by the Syrians, shows North Koreans inside. It played a pivotal role in Israel's decision to bomb the facility late at night last Sept. 6, a move that was publicly denounced by Damascus but not by Washington.

A member of the Axis of Evil is allegedly trafficking in weapons of mass destruction. Hmm...this has an all-too-familiar ring to it, eh? No, it's not Iraq in 2003; this time it's North Korea, which stands accused of assisting Syria with the construction of a secret reactor capable of processing weapons-grade plutonium. If memory serves, it would seem we've been here before, haven't we? Some four thousand dead Americans later, it's difficult not to think that Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © might well be capable of reprising the run-up to the invasion of Iraq.

Hell, why not? We've got something like 140,000 troops right next door. Western Iraq and Syria share a long and largely undefended border, so it doesn't really take a particularly nimble imagination to visualize the possibilities at work here. With Iran also bordering Iraq, the possibility for a "frequent-flier discount" seems like something no neoConservative worth the label would be willing to pass up.

I wake every morning silently praying the the current thugocracy will quietly leave office on 1.20.09 without sending more young Americans to their deaths in support of a corrupt, morally bankrupt ideology. That this corrupt ideology regards American lives as a small price to pay for world domination is something that any decent human being should find abhorrent and morally repugnant. And yet there are those who regard the war in Iraq as a expression of America's legitimate right to project its power in order to protect its own interests and security in an increasingly dangerous world.

There are now less than nine months left until The Worst President EVER © slithers off into the sunset. I can only pray- and I DO- that sanity will prevail during the interim and that no more wars will be started under false- or ANY- pretext. The fact that we have so many troops in a country bordering 2/3 of the Axis of Evil makes, and will keep, me nervous until 1.20.09...and that's assuming a Democrat wins the White House in November. If Bush Lite © somehow manages to pull one out of his @$$ and win the general election, those of you with children in the military just might want to make sure you have a burial plot waiting, just in case. I say that not to be flip, but if the past five years have demonstrated anything, it's that this Adminstration and its apologists view American lives as mere chess pieces in a game of geopolitical chess.

And it's SO much easier when someone else's children are doing the fighting and dying....
