Impeach Bush and Cheney for Torture (thanks to David Flanders for this one)
On 4/11/08, George Bush told ABC News he personally approved of the approval of torture - including waterboarding - by Dick Cheney, Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and George Tenet.... "Yes, I'm aware our national security team met on this issue. And I approved.".... In the wake of this shocking and appalling confession, we've come to a historic moment where every American - and every Member of Congress - must take a stand. Either you're for torture or you're against it. And if you're against it, you must support the only Constitutional remedy: impeachment.
From the "YEEhaw is NOT a foreign policy" department comes an effort that, in a perfect world, would have been successful years ago. For the past few years we've been bombarded with the mantra "America doesn't torture". Yeah, "freedom tickles"....
This is a classic example of Josef Goebbels' "Big Lie": repeat something often enough and with enough conviction and it will eventually come to be accepted as the truth. The veracity of the claim is beside the point. It's about using the power of repetition to convince the American sheeple, most of whom do whatever Fox News Channel tells them fo do (voting Republican IS easier than thinking), that their leaders are in control and acting in their best interest. If they say that "America doesn't torture", well, then America doesn't torture. Capice??
Perhaps the saddest aspect of this sorry chapter in our nation's history is the lack of media outrage. The revelation that America does in fact torture is related with less passion and anguish than a weather forecast. Even worse is the reality that. if a Democratic President was responsible for this sort of extralegal activity, the calls for his (or her) head would the lead story on every network and cable news broadcast. The hue and cry, the weeping and gnashing of teeth, and the rending of garments would be able to be heard from Ojai to Orono, and from Kennewick to Key West.
As with so much political malfeasance, however, Republicans get a free pass. Since so much of the mainstream media is controlled by corporate interests which are by nature thoroughly Conservative, Republicans are seldom, if ever, subjected to the same thorough scrutiny that miscreant Democrats receive. Hey, remember Ronald Reagan? It's not as if he was such a great President or an inspiring leader. It's that the media allowed him a free pass regardless of what extralegal activities his Administration was responsible for.
Iran-Contra? Oliver North? I could go on, but boys will be boys, right??
We have the power to demand that our leaders be held accountable. We have the power to demand that our leaders respect human rights and the rule of law. If we do not demand that our leaders immediately stop state-sanctioned torture, then we are every bit as responsible for, and and complict in, this despicable behavior.
NOW CAN WE IMPEACH THE LYING SON OF A BITCH?
