Maverick (n.): Republican for "I'll say (or do) whatever it takes to get elected."

"I noticed again today that Sen. Obama repeated his opposition to giving low-income Americans a tax break, a little bit of relief so they can travel a little further and a little longer, and maybe have a little bit of money left over to enjoy some other things in their lives," McCain said. "Obviously Sen. Obama does not understand that this would be a nice thing for Americans, and the special interests should not be dictating this policy.".... "Sen. Obama wants to raise the capital gains tax, which would have a direct effect on 100 million Americans," McCain said. "That means he has no understanding of the economy and that he is totally insensitive to the hopes and dreams and ambitions of 100 million Americans who will be affected by his almost doubling of the capital gains tax."

OK, so what kind of Republican has the foresight (and the amorality) to write into his famous McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform law a loophole that specifically excludes private planes such as the one owned by his wife? Well, probably the same Republican who proposes a drop-in-the bucket $.18 summertime break in the federal gas tax and then acts as if Sen. Barack Obama is of the Devil for calling it what it is- bull$#!%. When you have no ideas of your own to offer, I suppose the next best thing is to try to deflect attention from your ideological and moral bankruptcy, no? If you can't build, tearing down is probably your best (and only) option.

The thing that I find so amazing is that this isn't the first instance of Bush Lite © saying and doing whatever he thinks is necessary or him to win in November. While there are those in the media who insist on referring to Bush Lite © as a "maverick", a more accurate appellation might be "weasel" or, more simply, "liar" As if his performance during the Republican primaries didn't burnish his reputation as a politician willing to tailor his message to his audience, his stand on the Iraq war should remove any doubt that McCain is in fact a liar and prevaricator of the first order.

Three years ago, Bush Lite © was adamantly opposed to a long-term American military presence in Iraq. Now that he's trying to win over the GOP's Conservative base, he's more than willing, and even eager, to leave American troops in Iraq as long as it takes to get him elected President the job done.

Don't get me wrong; I admire John McCain's service to his country, but let's face facts, shall we? McCain's stay at the Hanoi Hilton was a long, long time ago. In the interim he's managed to become just another self-interested Republican more interested in his own self-aggrandizement and lust for power than in doing the job he was elected by the sheeple of Arizona to do. If Bush Lite © is the best candidate that the GOP can put forward...well, it would appear that Republicans are even more corrupt and morally bereft than I'd thought possible.

WE DESERVE BETTER.

I love the headline definition of Maverick. If you changed Republican to Democrat you would have a fine definition of HRC as well.

Speaking of HRC, would it be catty to say I think she might calm down a bit if she had some HRT?

And while I'm on the subject: Where the heck is HRC hiding HER flag pin?? I don't recall ever seeing one except in her official Senate photo.

Leslie, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed HRC's lack of flag pin. It drives me nuts that the talking heads keep dragging it up about Obama, but no-one says a word about her. Actually, I'm fairly certain I've seen McCain without one as well. So, what's up with that??
