I was at Washington Square yesterday morning, and as I was waiting for a new band to be put on my watch I wandered through the mall. While trying not to spend money, I came across an exhibit of art works by Beaverton-area high school students. Most of the exhibit was interesting, albeit rather forgettable. Then I ran across this piece, when absolutely stopped me dead in my tracks. Talk about an exercise in perspective.
"iNeed" is one level merely a work of paint on tin done by Hayley Lee, a 10th-grader at Southridge H.S. On another, it really is an indictment of our acquisitive, materialistic society- something I'm as guilty of as anyone else. The irony of this photograph being taken with my iPhone was not lost on me. I look at this, and I can't help but recognizing how truly insignificant some of my "problems" really are.
Every now and again, I need a kick in the backside to remind just how fortunate I truly am. I suppose this was merely the most recent installment. Sometimes it the simplest of messages that hit me the hardest....
