"Artist porn"? Or just art?

[T]here are certain things, not by fine artists, per se, that really turn me on and I affectionately refer to them as "Artist Porn". Note, the dictionary definition of porn is: "obscene writings, drawings, photographs, or the like, esp. those having little or no artistic merit." I certainly don't use the word by this definition. One of my friends insisted that I was describing a "guilty pleasure." But, no, that is just not the case. Dark chocolate is a guilty pleasure. Making love before breakfast is a guilty pleasure. Doing it during a conference call, well that's just plain kinky, but I digress. No, this is clearly "artist porn." These are things that light up my brain like a hormone-addled teenager gazing upon some moaning glistening assemblage of limbs.

Hmm...making love before breakfast...would that this were an option now. Ah, but I digress before I even get rolling....

I've always been fascinated by the way artists and other creative types manage to push the envelope when it comes to using sex as a marketing device. Hey, you might think that everyone wants to rule the world, but, truth be told, everyone wants to get laid. Sex is such a powerful and pervasive force in our world, and despite all attempts to keep this force under wraps and under control, we still find ourselves inundated with sexual imagery- some subtle, and some rather over the top and in your face. As I've heard elsewhere, you can't stop it; you can only hope to contain it...and even that doesn't last for very long. So you can either whine and moan about the coarsening of our culture and how this country's going to Hell in a handbasket...or you can try to figure out how to deal with the reality that this train has long since left the station. Hey, sex sells and sex lends itself to artistic imagery, limited only the creative vision of those willing to push the envelope. Everyone wants sex, everyone wants to figure out how to get some, and whether we want to admit it or not, sex is a primary motivating force. It stands to reason, then, that if you can creatively use sex to draw attention to a product, you just might sell more of it.

Same as it ever was.....
