Be it ever so humble (Chapter 2)....

It's amazing how odd things can feel after you've been away from home for awhile. After three weeks in a rental car, I got into my car at the airport, and it felt like someone else's car. I'd adapted to the Buick Lacrosse I'd been driving for three weeks, and I found myself reaching for the audio controls on the steering wheel...which my car doesn't have. I'm stick reaching for the gear shift on the floor...on my car it's on the steering column. After a bit more than 24 hours, things are beginning to feel familiar again, but it's a slow process.

The weirdest thing is that, after three weeks of 12-hour days, my time is my own- completely- for the next week. Imagine flying down the freeway at 90 MPH...and then slamming on the brakes. Yeah, that's pretty much what this feels like. I've always been pretty good at down time- having a decidedly laissez-faire personality will do that for you- but this just feels weird...not that I'm about to offer any complaints. I plan on doing some catching up, getting back on track with my marathon training, and just generally putting my life back in a place that's recognizable. In short, I'm going to have some fun. Tonight, I'm going to a comedy with a friend, and we're going to laugh. I need some of that right about now.

The good thing about the past three weeks is that being away from home has really made me appreciate what I have here. It may not be perfect, but it's home, and things are beginning to look up. Having to put my life on hold as I have has helped me recognize that I'm a very fortunate person in many respects...and I plan on spending the next few days reacquainting myself with some of the important things.

It's good to be King....
