I never cease to be amazed (and disturbed) that a man who spent five years as a prisoner of war in a North Vietnamese hellhole could be so cavailer about the war in Iraq. You'd think that a man who has known the horrors of war as Sen. John McCain has would be first in line looking out for the safety and welfare of our men and women in uniform. Well, you might think that, but you'd be wrong- WAY wrong.
Granted, I'm a Liberal Democrat, but try as I might, I simply cannot conjure up a scenario under which McCain is even remotely capable of honoring our troops in the manner they deserve. Judging by his comments, the man either simply doesn't care, or he's too horribly ineloquent to convince anyone with half a brain that he's not all about his own political prospects.
Even worse, no matter how much I parse McCain's verbal vomit or give him the benefit of the doubt, it's difficult not to come to the conclusion that this is a man who will say ANYTHING to become President. We saw it in the Republican primaries, and all he's doing now is proving that a leopard doesn't change its spots. What makes this all so comical is McCain's "Straight Talk Express", his inaptly and hilariously named bus. Frankly, Sen. McCain would recognize or be able to engage in "straight talk" if it bit him on the ass.
I find it difficult to escape the conclusion that Sen. McCain just simply doesn't care. Perhaps he's just so wrapped up in his ambition that everything else falls by the wayside. It's too bad, really. Given his background and his history, he could, if he so chose, be an effective and credible voice for our troops. Instead, he seems to view them as mere tools, useful only insofar as they support his overpowering ambition to become President...which is EXACTLY why he doesn't deserve to win in November.
WE DESERVE BETTER...and God knows our men and women in uniform certainly do....
