When you can't debate on the issues, character assassination is always a good option

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Megyn Kelly & Michelle Malkin

During a segment discussing conservative attacks against Michelle Obama, the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama, the network described the former as "Obama's baby mama.".... In fact, that description was displayed on screen several times during the segment, which featured anchor Megyn Kelly and conservative blogger Michelle Malkin, an FNC contributor.

Yesterday, I wrote about how we can likely look forward to some world-class character assassination being directed at Sen. Barack Obama. When I wrote that, I didn't think it would be something that would become evident on a daily basis. Man, if you liked what Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (find yer own damn link) represented in 2004, you're going to LOVE the whispering campaign that the Right appears ready to roll out this time around.

It would be nice to think that we might be able to have an actual, honest-to-God debate about the issues facing this country...and we may see that on occasion. The way things are beginning to shape up, though, rational debate will be much more the exception than the rule. As long as Fox News Channel is in the mix, you can bet that they're going to be providing a platform for those who care for little save the sound of their own voice and the self-professed brilliance of their convictions.

Besides, debates are boring. Character assassination and innuendo are WAY more fun, no??

Can't we all just get along? No? Well, OK, then....

WE DESERVE BETTER.

PS... here's Exhibit A as to why Sen. Dick Durbin (D-iL) is my new hero:

Well, I know Michelle. She has been my friend and a friend of my wife for many, many years. She can take it. She can handle herself. She is a very accomplished person. But I will tell you this: the hottest ring in Hell is reserved for those in politics who attack their opponents' families. And if there are some Republican strategists that think that's the way to win the election, I think they are wrong.
