Sometimes, ignorance can be it's own reward...or, too stupid to even recognize that he's stupid

There's a weird irony at work when Sen. Barack Obama, the black presidential candidate who will allegedly scrub the stain of racism from the nation, vows to run afoul of the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery. For those who don't remember, the 13th Amendment says: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime ... shall exist within the United States.".... I guess in Obama's mind it must be a crime to be born or to go to college. In his speech on national service Wednesday at the University of Colorado, Obama promised that as president he would "set a goal for all American middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year, and for all college students to perform 100 hours of service a year."

Most Conservatives would actively rail against the "something for nothing" mentality that accompanies so much federal largesse. Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach Jonah Goldberg to fish... and he bitches about having to learn how to fish in order to eat? Uh, what??

No, government should not be in the business of mandating or coercing volunteerism...or much of anything else, for that matter. Really, though; we all understand that when money is involved, strings (and hope accountability) should follow closely behind. Part of the role of government is to help those at the bottom of the socio-economic scale. One of the ways that government can wield influence in this direction is through the dispensation of tax dollars. IF you're going to accept tax dollars, you should be able to understand that expectations may well be attached to those dollars...unless you really DO believe that you deserve to get something for nothing.

No, national service isn't slavery. But it contributes to a slave mentality, at odds with American tradition. It assumes that work not done for the government isn't really for the "common good."

No one's advocating slavery here, Jonah. If you have a problem with expectations being attached to accepting federal tax dollars, there's a very simple choice available- don't accept the money. Pretty simple, eh?

In the meantime, if you can refrain from putting words to paper, no one will know what a (&^%$#@ maroon you are
