So, how's that free market economy working for you? This time four years ago, The Lone Star Iconoclast, as the hometown newspaper for President George W. Bush, endorsed Sen. John Kerry for president. Back then, we wholeheartedly believed Kerry would restore order to the chaos of the previous Bush term. Now, we feel called to return for a moment from exile near Crawford, Texas, to witness another presidential election and throw our two cents in... We trust Sen. Barack Obama to be our next President of the United States.... The next president must do more than let Jesus take the wheel; he must be willing to throw the free market money changers out of the temple.
I can't imagine that I'm the only one reveling in the delicious irony of the Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader's © hometown newspaper not only endorsing Barack Obama over John McCain, but doing so in a manner that completely disses McCain by ignoring him altogether. SCORE!! Man, that's gotta sting, no??
The good news is that there are still people here in Texas willing to face reality and address it head on. Too many diehard Republicans in Texas would sooner be buggered by a pack of horny Cub Scouts before they'd even consider voting for a Democrat. For these folks, Democrat = Liberal = Godless Communist. Never mind that so many Republicans that they'd go to the mat for are little more than empty suits bought and paid for by Big Business (et tu, John Cornyn? Rick Perry? Kay Bailey Hutchison??) These empty suits care about as much for the interests of everyday, middle class Texans (and Americans) as I do about Fundametalist Christianity...which is to say not a frickin' iota.
I understand why and how Democrats lost Texas once upon a time. Ineptitude, arrogance, and corruption tend to sneak up on you when you're too busy catering to your own self-interest and lining your own pockets. What I truly do not comprehend is how and why so many Texans reflexively vote Republican and against their own self-interest. Over time, they've allowed themselves to become so thoroughly propagandized that they simply cannot recognize that Republicans care nothing for them when there isn't an election involved. If people here in Texas (and in Utah, Wyoming, and West Virginia, etc.) could actually be bothered to think, they'd realize that reflexively voting Republican has gained them exactly nothing over the years. It has, however, lined the pockets of those who have a vested interest in keeping them down. How (&^%$#@ stupid is that??
It may be trite, but it's true: when you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything...and THAT, kids, is why Texas (along with Utah, Wyoming, and West Virginia, etc., etc.) is still a Red state. This will probably sound horribly arrogant, but it's true: stupid is as stupid votes.
Remember, when in doubt...VOTE FOR ANNIHILATION...MCCAIN ALL THE WAY!!
