It's not often that I find myself speechless. I can generally respond to just about anything- no matter how ostensibly brain-dead, pointless, or mean-spirited. This, however, besides being a new low, even for the knuckle-dragging inbreds at Westboro Baptist Church, is something I can barely begin to figure out how to respond to. Then again, if you're so thoroughly ignorant of the teachings of Jesus Christ to truly believe that God is a vindictive, mean-spirited, son-of-a-bitch...well, you're probably related to Fred Phelps, who, rumor has it, was the inspiration for HBO's "Crypt Keeper".
Yes, somewhere along the line, God apparently appointed Phelps and his merry band of inbreds as the ultimate arbiter of a person's worthiness of entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. Man, if these wackjobs are the ones I'll meet at the Pearly Gate, then how about you save all of us some time and tell me which exit I take to get onto the Expressway to Hell? Where Phelps gets off determining who is and is not worthy of being considered Godly and thus "worthy" is something no rational human being could ever hope to understand, much less explain. The fact that their ignorant judgmentalism is incredibly hurtful and insensitive in the extreme seems to be lost on these trolls. Of course, when your God is a cranky, vindictive SOB, you're probably not exactly going to be the life of the party, either....
Compassion? Show me where you find compassion in the Old Testament....
To say that Phelps and his merry band of inbreds represent everything wrong with Christianity today seems so obvious as to barely be worthy of belaboring the point. Seriously considering Phelps and his thoroughly f---ed-up philosophy would do a grave injustice to the many good and sincere folks who actually try to follow and live by the teachings of Jesus Christ. Honestly, Phelps and his WBC brethren have far more in common with radical Islamofascists than they do good, God-fearing Christians. Neither Islamofascists nor Phelps and his wackjobs seem to have any understanding of the teachings of the religion they profess to represent. Both are far more about hatred, ignorance, control, and destruction than about peace, love, and tolerance...which actually are tenets of both Christianity and Islam.
The Bible is NOT a bludgeon, and ignorance and hatred are not tools of the truly faithful...but you try being the one to tell that to Phelps and his band of fools. I'm not about to try and reason with the thoroughly and completely unreasonable.
