Monday was World Aids Day...a fact that somehow managed to fly right by me. Nonetheless, missing it by a couple of days doesn't change the reality of the suffering that HIV/AIDS continues to inflict on humanity, both in the US and abroad. One could perhaps argue that progress is being made, and that will, I suppose, depend on your perspective. If you have HIV/AIDS, you're still living with the reality of what in most cases is still a death sentence.
Whatever your orientation or perspective on this issue, the numbers are, and are likely to remain, staggering. Like some of you, I still have relatives who continue to believe that HIV/AIDS is God's revenge against homosexuals...which only proves that your God is a mean-spirited, vindictive son-of-a-bitch.
I can only presume to speak for myself, but I think I'm on solid ground here in saying that most good and decent people would like nothing better than seeing HIV/AIDS and the suffering it creates defeated in our lifetime. If you believe in the power of prayer, this might be a good time to put some of that belief and that power to the test.
