Obama administration 'anti-religious,' Gingrich says

(CNN) -- Newt Gingrich said Tuesday the Obama administration is "intensely secular" and "anti-religious," the former House Speaker's second hard-hitting criticism of the new administration this week. In an interview with FOX News, Gingrich said he strongly disagreed with Obama's choice of Harry Knox -- an outspoken activist for gay rights -- to the White House advisory council on faith-based initiatives.... "I think their goal is to have a very secular America in which government dominates everything," he said. "Why wouldn't you put an anti-religious, left-wing zealot on a faith-based group? It's a perfect pattern for this administration."

Wow, I had NO idea that Newt Gingrich was such a faithful, Bible-thumping Christ-head.... Or is it just that Gingrich happens to think he's found an issue with which he can appeal to the uber-Christian Religious Right who feel that Barack Obama is Satan in an athletic-cut suit?

No, instead of recognizing Knox' appointment for what it is- a reflection of Obama's commitment to inclusiveness and a reduced reliance on labels- Gingrich is seeking to burnish his politcal apple by playing and age-old Republican game. If you can't win over your base with the force of your ideas...well, then find someone you can convince people to hate. It's not quite "divide and conquer", but it certainly is "demonize and conquer". When people begin to hate, they cease thinking, and a charismatic leader can manipulate the intellectually stunted to their own advantage. This is the very definition and arc of Newt Ginrich's career.

The reality is that Newt Gingrich hasn't had an original thought or idea since 1994, when his "Contract on With America" was supposed to turn Washington into a Shining City on the Hill. It didn't take long for it to be revealed as just another empty shell designed to further Gingrich's political ambitions. So it will likely be with the latest eruption of Mount Newt- a good deal of sound and fury that in the end will be revealed and signifying nothing of value or meaning.

Too bad that the Religious Right is less concerned with hypocritical Right-wingers willing to milk Christianity to every ounce of advantage they can gain than with the "evils" of a Democrat occupying the White House. Then again, it's nice to see a true man of God looking our for our spiritual and moral well-being , eh? Right...now if you''ll excuse me, I have a winning lottery ticket I need to cash in so I can buy that deserted Carribean island I've always dreamed of.

Hypocrisy does seem to be the one universal Republican character trait these days, doesn't it??
