Yes, it's true; God really IS a Republican

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Floriduh Gov. Charlie Crist (R-Jesusland)

A Florida program which allows you to design custom license plates is set to get another two designs that are already causing controversy. The two new designs are Christian-themed, one featuring a cross in front a stained-glass window and the other an image of Jesus Christ in a position that most resembles him on the cross. A similar bill has passed in South Carolina, but a federal judge has halted production while the constitutionality of the license plates is adjudicated. Floria Governor Charlie Crist was asked about the whether this violates the separation between church and state. He responded, "If they don't want one they don't have to buy one."

There are many things in our world that set my hair on fire. Few things will accomplish this more quickly than elected public officials who contravene the separation of Church and State in an effort to pander to Right-wing Social Conservatives and Christians for political gain. I have to believe that Charlie Crist is smart enough to understand that what the state of Floriduh is trying to do is blatantly unconstitutional. Then again, far too many Christians, particularly in places like Floriduh, place their narrow, judgmental beliefs above the Constitution. Apparently, these folks really believe that God is a Republican, and as such is on their side. After all, why is "In God We Trust" on our money??

Look, I frankly don't care how you happen to express your overarching religiosity. It's a free country, and if you want to have your neighbor nail you to a cross to prove your devotion to Jesus...well, knock yourself out. Where I draw the line is at the idea of using public money to promote Christianity on license plates. It's not the job, nor the place, of government to promote the interests of a particular religion or religious group. The job of government is to take care of the People's business, one that you'd think these days would be a full-time occupation for those in government. When would anyone actually have time to proselytize?

Crist's argument that those who don't like the Jesus license plate shouldn't buy one is both offensive and completely superfluous. Religious freedom doesn't mean having the freedom to use public money to support one religion at the expense of others. Of course, IF Floriduh had similar plates for Jews, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, and Packers fans, this argument would be much different. Of course, you can bet that if this were the case, good, God-fearing Floriduh Christians would be decrying the idolatry of it all. Tolerance? Who needs tolerance? WE HAVE JESUS ON OUR LICENSE PLATES!!

Lord, save me from your followers....
