The Consequences Of Global Warming -- From A To Z

I'm not going to wade into the debate over global climate change with the the hope of changing anyone's mind. For most of us, that train's already left the station. By now, you either believe or you don't. Personally, I believe that the threat- and the promise- of global climate change is very, very real. I believe that we have a unique opportunity before us, an opportunity to take positive action before we reach the point where it's simply too late and no amount of change will make a difference. We have an opportunity to "fix" the damage we've done and continue to do, but the window of opportunity appears to be closing. Are we going to sit on our hands and deny the reality of global climate change? Must we wait until our ecosystem is so irretrievably out of whack that we can no longer ignore reality?

I understand that good and decent people can and do disagree, but here's a simple question that deserves a good, long, hard look: What if Al Gore is right? What if global climate change is real? What if changes in global climate patterns really are the harbinger of the consequences of our sloth and ignorance?? Beyond those questions, what harm would it do to become better stewards of the only planet we have? Would it kill us to kick our addiction to fossil fuels? To lean more on renewable energy resources? To reduce our collective carbon footprint? Or are we really will to risk taking the chance that a growing mountain of empirical evidence regarding global climate change is wrong?

Really, what harm would be done by being smarter, more efficient, and more prudent in how we impact the environment. Even if you're not convinced of the reality of global climate change, what harm could be done by being better stewards of the planet? After all, it's not as if we have a backup lined up.

What IF Al Gore is right?
