Meanwhile, in the latest conservative news, the Republican mainstream continues to slide into ultra-nationalistic militaristic paranoia and championed white supremacy along the normal trajectory: the actual John Birch Society -- the comically radical conservative organization of racists and psychotic libertarians who pretended to fight domestic commies, 50 years ago -- has of course been named a cosponsor of next year's CPAC, the conservatives' important annual mid-week terrorfest at which delegations of the nation's top barely-functioning insane wingnuts decide who gets to run for what job.
Just when you might have thought it was safe to once again begin thinking that maybe, just maybe, the GOP had finally managed to remove their collective anterior from their collective posterior...well, the fun just never seems to end, eh? No, those aren't Communists under your bed, but you'd have all sorts of trouble convincing Birchers of that. That the Birchers are now sponsoring the Conservative's version of mass self-gratification ought to tell you everything you know about where the GOP is headed...as in "over a cliff at warp speed."
If the Republicans are to have any hope to become the party of the majority again, they're going to need to come to grips with the reality that the direction they're heading is hardly the way to go about it. Pushing for ideological purity is no way to open up the big tent and attract sufficient numbers to climb back to the top of the mountain. Neither is embracing those whose major contribution to public discourse is foaming at the mouth and trumpeting their world-class ignorance for all to see. Taking on the John Birch Society as a sponsor is merely the latest example of the GOP's willing (and rapid) self-destruction.
Not surprisingly, I'm OK with Republicans eating their young. It may be very entertaining, but it just proves how completely unfit they are to lead this country. It just too bad that Democrats seem not to realize that they're in charge now. We seem to be bent on our own rapid and very public self-destruction.
WE DESERVE BETTER.
