Let the speculation begin, eh?

It hasn't been easy being a Minnesota native and a Vikings fan over the past few days. Not only have we had to endure a painful loss in New Orleans that was the result of stupid mistakes, now we have to be party to the annual "Will he or won't Brett Favre retire?" ritual. We all knew this was coming, of course, but a week and a half before the Super Bowl, we're already thinking about next year. And we're wondering what we're going to do for quarterback.

Tarvaris Jackson? Please.

Sage Rosenfels? Only if we're looking to miss the playoffs.

I'd love to see Favre under center again, but at 40 years old- and after the pounding he took Sunday in New Orleans- there aren't any guarantees. At some point, he- and Vikings fans everywhere- are going to have to admit that not only is the end near, it may well be upon us. After all, you have to think that he's going to want to be able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding. A few more beating like he took on Sunday, and that may be problematical.

The question, then, becomes what's next? And when. Never mind who...and no, we shouldn't even be considering drating Tim freakin' Tebow....

In about a week or so, I'll be recovered from my disappointment enough to root for New Orleans. If Minnesota can't play in the Super Bowl, then it would be tough to argue that the city of New Orleans doesn't deserve the boost.

It just would have been nice to see Brett Favre go out playing his last game in the Super Bowl.
