On Fox News Saturday, guest Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney (retired) offered a radical solution for improving national security. "We have to use profiling," he said, "And I mean be very serious and harsh about the profiling." Then McInerney proposed the United States should strip search all 18-28 year old Muslim men at airports.... "If you are an 18-28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched. And if we don't do that there's a very high probability we're going to lose an airline."
The beautiful thing about the (New and Improved!! Now with even MORE Racism and Religious Hatred!!!) War on Terror is that it's given free reign to all those who seem to believe that our unfocused rage gives us license to suspend the very things we claim to be fighting to defend. Freedom? Liberty? Well, they're great as abstract concepts, but since America was founded by White men, those ideas really only apply to Caucasians, no? After all, it's night like Whites are terrorists or anything....
(....'cept for Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, and Ted Kaczynski, that is....)
Besides, sometimes you have to sacrifice freedom in order to save it...right??
I can't even begin to understand how or why McInerney could think that strip-searching an entire class of individuals is acceptable. To single out every male air traveler between the ages of 18-25 simply because of their appearance is the worst sort of racism imaginable. Never mind that McInerney's idea is based on pure racism and the idea that those who look and believe differently from the White majority are ipso facto potential terrorists and therefore not worthy of enjoying the civil and constitutional rights that accrue to REAL (i.e., White) Americans. Never mind that McInerney's argument, if implemented, puts us on a slippery slope destined to separate us, perhaps permanently, for the nation we've strived to be.
If you're looking for proof that we've leaned nothing from the Civil Rights Era...well, here's your sign. Still think the terrorists haven't won?
