Today in W.T.F.

Fox News' Brit Hume gave Tiger Woods some personal advice Sunday morning, telling the scandal-plagued (and Buddhist) golfer to 'turn to Christianity' to make a full recovery. On "Fox News Sunday," Hume -- the former leader of Fox News' political reporting and host of "Special Report" who now serves as an analyst for the network -- said that Woods' recovery "depends on his faith.".... "The extent to which he can recover seems to me depends on his faith," Hume said. "He is said to be a Buddhist. I don't think that faith offers the kind of forgivness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. My message to Tiger would, 'Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world."

Just when you might have begun to think that the hypocrisy emanating from the Right couldn't possibly become any more vomit-inducing...well, here comes Brit Hume of Fox Noise Channel pushing Christianity as the resolution to all real and/or perceived moral failings. Hume, of course, is to objective journalism what Josef Stalin was to rational political discourse. Having styled himself as the smartest person in the room during a long and underwhelming career as a "journalist", Hume now apparently thinks himself qualified to dispense relationship and image-mending advice to Tiger Woods. To Hume's way of thinking, this Buddhism crap that Woods believes in is just going to have to go by the boards if Woods wants to win back the American public. Yessirree...we 'Merkins just loves us a good redemption story...you know, man grows up in a double-wide, works hard, and graduates to a manufactured home in Malibu. And that ain't nothin' that says redemption more than "I GOT JESUS!!" Why yes, at times like this, I want to just break out in songs of praise...but since no one needs to be subjected to me singing, I think I'll let mi compadre Madeleine Begun Kane do the artistic thingy:

Telling Tiger To Convert Just Ain't Kosher
By
Madeleine Begun Kane

Tiger Woods' rep has really been hurt.
Hume's solution? The guy should convert:
Be a Buddhist no more --
Enter Christian faith's door.
Get redemption for chasing each skirt.

The problem, of course, is that Hume's "advice" is concerned only with Tiger's public image...which seems as if it was the problem all along. It appears that Woods was concerned first and foremost with his public image, while his private life and personal demons worked to erode the house of cards he lived in.

I don't know what Woods needs in order to be able to put his life back together. That's something he'll have to figure out for himself as he learns to be true to his authentic self. What I do know is that taking relationship and image-building "advice" from Brit Hume is like seeking advice on becoming a vegetarian from Jeffrey Dahmer. And claiming that you've found Jesus is so 2008....
