James Bow, here. It has been a pretty long, hard slog this afternoon. When Jack told me about the problems he was having with his blog, I investigated, then tried to upgrade the whole shebang to Movable Type 5.0.1. That’s when my troubles really began.
In the end, I had to create a new database for Jack, then do a clean install of Movable Type, and try to find some way to import the entries and comments from his old web site into the new one. This proved easier said than done, but it is done.
The good news is: the site is now active. You can now comment on the latest two posts (apparently that functionality disappeared sometime around January. Even better, you can now register and sign in to comment or, if you choose to comment anonymously, you now face a fairly simple Captcha test. You know, just when I was moving the system over to the new database and struggling with importing old entries, two spam comments just happened to materialize in the comments table. Well, at least that told me that the new system was working, but I also knew that I had to turn on comment spam security soon.
The bad news is: there’s a lot of work still to be done. I’ve got to transfer over some of the old functionality to the new site and, worse, I seem to have lost all of Jack’s posts from between 2002 and 2004. I don’t know what I’m going to do to get these back.
But the bulk of the work is now done, so please feel free to comment away. Just be warned that, for the next few hours at least, service may be spotty here. I appreciate your patience.
