Greetings from the set of "Idiocracy II: Attack of the Teabaggers"

What can you say about Palin and Bachmann that hasn’t already been said about Leopold and Loeb? They’re like the Lucy and Ethel of the lunatic fringe.

Joy Behar

I never cease to marvel at the things teabaggers have accepted as Gospel. Just when I begin to think that they might, just might, have reached the bottom of the intellectual barrel, I learn all over again that this is indeed a barrel with no bottom. Ignorance, lunacy, and the willing to broadcast both is not a new phenomenon in American history; it just seems a great deal more prevalent now. Hell, one could make a convincing argument that this nation has been in the thrall of truly undeniably stupid people since the founding of the Republic. It’s just that now we have the benefit of the Internet and a 24/7 media all competing for stories, which makes non-entities like teabaggers front page news…if only because news today is as much about entertainment as anything else. If this was all just entertainment, I could have a good laugh at the expense of these loons and call it a day. The problem, though, is that the loons are deadly serious.

Think about it for a moment. If you honestly believe that Glenn Beck is a prophet, if you’ve managed to convince yourself that Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann represent the future of our great nation…well, how do you manage to tie your shoe laces each morning? I know people who are absolutely convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that both of these things are true, and I’m stunned that such normally lucid, intelligent people can so willingly suspend disbelief (and critical thinking) to the degree that they have. Watching news footage of Tea Party (and indeed most Republican) rallies is like watching outtakes from “Idiocracy”. We’ve become captivated by the lowest common denominator, those who willingly and easily throw their brains into reverse whenever Beck, Bachmann, Palin, etc., ad nauseum toss off a delightfully fact-free emotional appeal.

Sorry, y’all…but if you actually believe that Barack Obama is a Socialist, a Kenyan Citizen, a Muslim, a terrorist sympathizer, an idiot, an enemy of the Sheeple, a tyrant, or combinations of any and all of these, how about you do all of us a favor and burn your voter registration card? Seriously, if you can’t be bothered to live in the world of facts and reality, isn’t it about time you went back to watching Tom and Jerry reruns and left politics to the adults? Some of us are tired of the shouting, the rampant ignorance, the lunacy, and the willingness to ignore the basic American concept of majority rules. Refusal to accept the reality of a democratically-elected African-American man in the White House does not ipso facto translate to the dark specter of creeping Socialism and tyranny.

Here’s a radical idea: if you’re going to publicly refer to the President as an idiot, I would only offer that it takes one to know one. If you think that this is reasonable and appropriate behavior, you might want to make certain that your own IQ isn’t mired in the mid-double digits. Knowhutimean??
