Holier than thou...and built to stay that way

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN)

Personally, I could care less if Mark Souder buggered goats in his Capitol Hill office. In a day and age when too many people are far too concerned with the sexual identity, practices, and peccadilloes of public officials, I would just frankly rather not know. What does concern me is the hypocrisy that so many “family values” Republicans seem to exude when it comes to sexuality. From what I can tell, the literal translation of “family values Republican” is “f——-g hypocrite” (pun intended).

Far-Right Jesus-y Republicans like Souder have cut their nut on the idea of getting government out of the lives of ordinary Americans…unless there’s a moral issue involved. When it comes to sex, these loons are ever-ready to insert government into the bedrooms and sex lives of Americans. This is why I feel only scorn for Souder…and not because of his affair (Hell, men having been boinking women outside of committed relationships since Adam discovered his penis.). No, my antipathy for Souder is based solely on his world-class hypocrisy and his desire to be remembered as an “Evangelical Christian”. (literal translation of “Evangelical Christian”: “If you ain’t got Jesus, you ain’t s—t”) For people like Souder, their “Christianity” is a club to be wielded against those who think, live, and believe differently. For people like Souder, hypocrisy is a way of life…and he represents everything that’s wrong with modern Christianity.

While Mark Souder was banging Tracy Jackson, he was lecturing others on the evils of sex- extramarital and otherwise. Souder maintained his smoke screen of Jesus-y anti-sex activism while he was sneaking around behind his wife’s back and doing one of his staffers. This from the man who frequently opined “that out-of-wedlock sex always leads to pregnancy and ruins lives”.

So, how’d that out-of-wedlock sex work for you, Congressman?

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Republican Rep. Mark Souder acknowledged an affair with a staffer Tuesday unexpectedly announced his resignation…. “I am so ashamed to have hurt the ones I love,” he said at a news conference in Fort Wayne. “I am sorry to have let so many friends down, people who have worked so hard for me.” His resignation is effective Friday…. “I sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff,” Souder said. “In the poisonous environment of Washington, D.C., any personal failing is seized upon and twisted for political gain. I am resigning rather than put my family through a painful drawn out process.”

I just LOVE the way that Souder is trying to spin his affair as a “personal failing” that can and will be “seized upon and twisted for political gain”. I love it, because you can bet that if we were talking about a Democratic Congressman, Souder would be at the head of the crowd demanding that the miscreant be tarred and feathered for sinning against God and against his family. The hypocrisy inherent in Souder’s words and actions is almost beyond comprehension, and yet he’s attempting to spin it in such a way that he’ll be granted absolution by his fellow Christians hypocrites, most of whom are quite likely thanking their lucky stars that they weren’t the one having to do the public perp walk and tearful mea culpa.

There’s something very wrong with the idea of someone holding themselves up as “holier than thou” and preaching the virtues of keeping it in your pants while they travel a different path. Sex is not something that’s bad only for others. You don’t get to pass judgment over someone with a zipper problem when yours is equally defective. It’s not “abstinence for you, but a mistress for me”. Hypocrisy is never acceptable, especially when you’ve based your entire Congressional career on hypocrisy and lies.

I don’t care about the sex. I’ll leave it to others to judge Mark Souder for his infidelity. He’s going to have to answer to, and possibliy reconcile with, his wife of 36 years. The consequences of Souder’s hypocrisy and duplicity are only just beginning, which is as it should be. If you’re going to live by the sword, and your life doesn’t mirror your stated beliefs, then you’re going to have to expect that you’ll eventually die by the sword…and few deserve it more than Mark Souder. Go to Hell. Go directly to Hell. Do not pass “GO”. Do not collect $200. Go to Hell; there’s a reserved parking space with your name on it.

Hey, has anyone seen my scarlet letter??….
