Greetings from (something vaguely resembling) Paradise, eh?

The weather in Arm, Mississippi is 91 degrees and sunny, with 89% humidity today. And that, my friends is why I live in Los Angeles.

After a trip to the gym to instill some life into my weary body, I’m staring out the window of my living room, sucking on a soy latte as if my life depended on it. Given the weather, that might not be as much of a stretch as your might think.

Yes, it’s another leaden, sodden Juneuary day here in Puddletown. While most of the country luxuriates in what I can only assume is summer, the climate here is more akin to mid-winter than t-shirt and shorts weather- 61 degrees and blustery, accompanied by the steady drumbeat of liquid sunshine. As you might imagine, the collective frame of mind in these parts is something bordering on depression. Gray is the order of the day…and it promises to be that way for the next few days.

As much as I love living here, and I truly do, there are days when I’d give anything to wake up beside a pool in Scottsdale with a sunburn and a case of heat exhaustion. Here it is, early June…and I’m still trying to figure where I misplaced my umbrella.

The heavy rain that moved into the area late Tuesday will continue throughout today. Expect windy, wet conditions through Friday, the National Weather Service warns.

Today’s high: 62 degrees.

This week’s wet conditions increase the chance of backcountry avalanches, debris flow and urban flooding.

Nice, eh? When the headline features “Today will be a soaker in Portland….”, and your calendar says “June 2nd”…well, August can’t get here soon enough, eh??

Try though I might, it’s difficult at times not to allow my mood to fall victim to the weather. It’s tough to feel really good about things when it’s gray, blustery, and rainy. Then again, I moved here knowing full well that summer often is limited to the long Fourth of July holiday weekend. There’s a reason that I never pack my sweaters away….

The good news is the my risk of getting skin cancer is at a record low. No sun, no burn, no skin cancer. You see? It really IS all about looking on the bright side…. (Cue the Monty Python chorus….)

If you’re tubing the Guadalupe or chasing sand crabs in Key West, remember to send up a few for us here in Puddletown when you hit your knees tonight. Either that, or have a cold one or six for us. At this point, either choice would be appreciated.

Cheers…. ;-)
