An open letter to Ben Stein: a miserable excuse for a human being

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Ben Stein

The people who have been laid off and cannot find work are generally people with poor work habits and poor personalities. I say “generally” because there are exceptions. But in general, as I survey the ranks of those who are unemployed, I see people who have overbearing and unpleasant personalities and/or who do not know how to do a day’s work. They are people who create either little utility or negative utility on the job. Again, there are powerful exceptions and I know some, but when employers are looking to lay off, they lay off the least productive or the most negative. To assure that a worker is not one of them, he should learn how to work and how to get along — not always easy.

Mr. Stein:

I almost don’t even know where or how to begin with someone so thoroughly and despicably insensitive and mean-spirited as yourself. I’d like to tell you exactly what I’m thinking and how I feel about your self-satisfied, arrogant dismissing of millions of Americans, but I’m unemployed myself. I have to believe that potential employers might read this, so I’ll refrain from suggesting that you go fornicate yourself. I’ll also refrain from telling you what self-sharpening kitchen utensil you might considering fornicating yourself with. Discretion is the better part of valor…and I’m ALL about discretion….

I simply don’t possess a vocabulary that would do justice to the depth of my antipathy for you. Your arrogance and smug self-righteousness rise above mere arrogance and self-satisfaction. 15 millions are unemployedbecause we don’t know how to play well with others? Really? I might give you the benefit of the doubt, and pass your insensitivity off as evidence of a bad day…if your words weren’t so typical of your smug Right-wing self-righteousness. The sad reality is that you specialize in pouring salt into the wounds of those not in your socio-economic and ideological class. To your way of thinking, those who differ from you are lesser human beings, and as such unworthy of compassion and kindness. You may not realize this, Mr. Stein, but this only demonstrates beyond question the reality that you’re a miserable, compassion-deprived excuse for a human being. Not that you care.

The recession, which is the actual reason so many Americans are out of work, is due to the collective bad behavior of large financial institutions. For some reason, though, you see nothing wrong with blaming the unemployed for our plight. We weren’t the ones whose greed and profligate arrogance plunged this economy into the worst downturn since the Great Depression. We didn’t bet the farm on subprime mortgages and drag the global economy to the precipice of disaster. It wasn’t our greed and corruption that gifted us with 10% unemployment as credit dried up and banks turtled. You’re smart enough to recognize the truth…and yet you blame us? Thank you for demonstrating once again that “Conservative” might as well be an anagram for “smug and self-righteous”.

Mr. Stein, you may fancy yourself a brilliant economist, but you don’t have a freakin’ clue. You’re a heartless, compassion-deprived troll, fortunate enough to not have to worry about where your next Big Mac is coming from. This apparently allows you to feel justified in believing that everyone not like you is a lesser mortal, and therefore clearly deserving of whatever ill befalls them. As you live in comfort and ease, millions of Americans DON’T know where their next Big Mac is coming from. All they want is to be able to make ends meet and feed their families.

I know 15 million Americans who wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire. May you roast in Hell.

Sincerely,

Jack Cluth
