Larissa Riquelme, a gorgeous lingerie model who promised to run naked through the streets of Asuncion if Paraguay won the World Cup, saw her nudity pledge end in heartbreak on Saturday. Her national team held on tight against heavily favored Spain, but the Spaniards ultimately prevailed with a late goal.
For a few days at least, I was a HUGE fan of the Paraguayan soccer team. It wasn’t so much that I wanted Paraguay to beat Spain, though that would have been an interesting and unexpected upset. It was the promise made by an attractive Paraguayan lingerie model blessed with an impressive…um…cell phone holder?
Larissa Riquelme promised to run naked through Asuncion if Paraguay won the World Cup. Granted, the odds of that happening were somewhat akin to me being mistaken for Lindsay Lohan, but it did ratchet up the interest in Paraguay’s soccer fortunes, eh? Never mind that Riquelme undoubtedly understood that there was no downside in this proposition for her. The odds of her having to honor her commitment were somewhere between slim and none (though I suspect that she would have happily held up her end of the bargain if Paraguay had won the World Cup). Even better, she garnered what must be millions of dollars in free publicity…which certainly can’t hurt her modeling career.
Something tells me that we’ll all be seeing a lot more of Ms. Riquelme (probably wearing a lot less)…and probably quite soon. I’m not sure that’s a bad thing by any means. ;-)
