I'd look for work, but I'm kinda busy learning how to freebase

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN)

Wamp […] said small business, the NFIB and he as governor “must resist… any more mandates to small business to help the unemployed — that we have continued to extend on a federal level, I think, unemployment compensation so long that there’s disincentives for people to actually re-enter the workforce or go out and look for a job…. “And this is creating a culture of dependence which we do not need. We want people out there scraping and clawing and looking for work and not just sitting back waiting. And so we’ve got to not allow any more mandates.”

Before I get myself all wound up, let me just get my topic sentence out of the way immediately:

Because “Compassionate Conservatism” really IS an oxymoron.

There; I feel better though I’m not certain why. I’m sick to death of brain-dead, compassion-deprived, self-righteous zealots like Wamp who have NO idea how the other half lives opining on our perceived moral turpitude. For reasons I can’t even begin to comprehend, they’ve convinced themselves that the unemployed (of which I am one) are a motley collection of unmotivated, drug-addicted losers who can’t be bothered to get off their asses, leave their trailers, and get one of the oh-so-plentiful jobs out there. Conservatives really DON’T give a tinker’s damn about anyone but themselves and their own interests. Zach Wamp is merely the latest illustration…and confirmation…of this sorry reality. The truth is that Conservatives, too busy channeling self-interest (and Ayn Rand) to give even so much as a passing thought to the social contract . Yes, it’s true; Republicans would be quite happy to abandon the unemployed to their fate. Never mind the fact that it was the GOP and The Worst President EVER © who graced us with an economy nearly on life support. Far be it from Republicans to admit complicity or, even better (and less likely to happen), accept responsibility. No, it’s far easier to blame the victims, those left without a job when the economy shriveled up like a raisin due to Republican corruption, incompetence, and mismanagement.

To even think, much less voice, the considered opinion that the unemployed don’t want to work is so far beyond offensive I don’t even know where to begin. Wamp is not alone in his callousness and absence of compassion and simple human decency. It appears that this ignorance and meanness has infected a goodly cross-section of the GOP. That this talking point can be discussed with anything resembling seriousness should offend any human being possessing even the barest shred of human decency. Americans don’t toss one another to the wolves…and yet this is exactly what Wamp and his ilk are proposing.

This is very personal for me, so I’ll freely admit to not being the most objective of voices in this debate. Nonetheless, I find it hard to be objective about a miserable excuse for a human being like Zach Wamp, whom I wouldn’t piss on if he suddenly and spontaneously found himself en fuego. America is better than this…but then being a Republican means never having to care about anything but political power. People are useful only insofar as they can be cowed and propagandized into voting Republican. That so many Americans are ignorant enough to fall for this propaganda is a phenomenon I will likely never understand. If there is in fact a place called Hell, I fervently hope that it will be Zach Wamp’s ultimate destination. His black, self-interested heart will feel right at home.

WE DESERVE BETTER.
