Leadership and sanity: not exactly what it used to be

Let me see if I have this straight: in the last few days members of the GOP have savagely screwed the unemployed, protected the bankstas, trashed Thurgood Marshall, implied rape and incest is part of God’s plan, defended BP, threatened to either end social security or screw over 20 million plus people who have paid into the system for at least 20 years by making them wait until age 70 to see their benefits, and screwed homeless veterans with children. That about it, or is there more? (Ed. note: from DailyKos)

I’ve watched slackjawed over the past few days as various and assorted GOP “leaders” have voiced their desire to subject the sensibilities of the American electorate to what can only be described in political terms as a gang rape. The naked ambition, the assault on American values, and the sheer arrogance with which this agenda is being pursued is almost beyond comprehension, much less belief…and yet there it is. Whether it’s John Boehner’s political tonedeafness, Sharon Angle’s Jesus-y dismissal of unemployment and legitimate suffering, Jeff Session’s arrogant trashing of Thurgood Marshall, or…ad infinitum, ad nauseum…this is the party that wants to lead America into the future?

Even worse is that this is the vision that the GOP has for restoring American exceptionalism. This is how they plan on getting this country back on its feet again? This is the best they have to offer? REALLY?? And a large number of Americans are actually falling for it? Jeebus, y’all; how stupid…nah, I’m not going there, because the answer is pretty self-evident. We’ve turned into the set of Idiocracy II…because collectively, we’ve lost the ability to think for ourselves. It’s SO much easier to allow ourselves to be propagandized with hatred, disinformation, simple solutions to complex problems, and the belief that it’s all the fault of those God—-n Liberals who want to run our lives.

I’m not going to sit here and opine that all Republicans are evil, self-absorbed, self-righteous zealots willing to force their ignorance, hatred, and narrow, Jesus-y agenda on America. There are those who would do exactly that, however…and those are the folks currently making the most noise. I grew up believing that America is a place where there’s room for all of us, regardless of race, creed, color, or whatever label you might happen to wear. Then 9.11 came along, and our fear of the Other has gradually led us to a place that grows darker with the passage of time. For reasons known only to themselves, White Christian Republicans have appointed themselves keeper of the American flame…and they refuse to accept or acknowledge that other points of view can be and are equally valid. Even worse, Americans have stood idly and mutely by as the haters have attemtpted to force their agenda upon this country.

With Kagan’s confirmation hearings expected to last most of the week, Republicans may still have time to make cases against Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Gandhi.

I’d love to see an honest, open dialogue about the future of our country. It’s long overdue, but, to paraphrase Winston Churchill, how can you have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent? When your adversary’s arsenal consists of ignorance, vitriol, rage, hatred, racism, and innuendo…well, the opportunity for honest and open discourse looks like it’s gone the way of the Hindenburg, eh?

What’s truly sad is that so many Americans are willingly participating in the dissolution of American greatness. They continually vote against their own interests and support the agenda of those who don’t give a damn about them…except when the need their votes to maintain their position of power. I’m not saying that Liberals and Democrats have all the answers, but it’s become increasingly clear that Conservatives and Republicans have none. And yet so many Americans continue to swallow the propaganda like candy; how long will it be before they realize that what their swallowing is hemlock?
