A question for the American Sheeple: Where were you??

Let’s never forget that the American GOP ruined US health care and wouldn’t fix it, ruined the economy and refused to fix it, laid workers off and refused to re-hire them, outsourced jobs and refused unemployment benefits, started wars and refused to end them, and unleashed banking greed and refused to control it, deregulated BIG OIL and apologized to them for the worst oil spill in US history.

I never cease to be amazed at how malleable and easily propagandized the American Sheeple can be. So many of the ignorant and ill-informed are willing to blame President Obama for our current problems…while completely ignoring the reality of how we got to where we are. Our economy didn’t magically and immediately get flushed on 1.20.09, nor did the myriad other problems materialize once President Obama finished taking the Oath of Office. No other President has taken the Oath of Office and been handed the raftload of problems Barack Obama was gifted with…and yet a significant number of Americans blame Obama. The Right has demonstrated that Job One is to destroy President Obama, and far too many Americans are willing to go along for the right. Perhaps they don’t realize (or care) that if HE fails, WE fail. Then again, when only 42% of Americans believe that Obama was born in this country…Jeebus, but we’re a collection of brain-dead morons….

The willful ignorance and Right-wing propaganda reflected by this sign is something I should be used to by now, and if I was a better person I’d simply ignore it. Sadly, I’m not, and this sort of willful, calculated ignorance angers me. People are going to think and believe what they’re conditioned to…even if it’s stupid and demonstrably untrue. This is, I suppose, what happens when people refuse to think critically and are happy allowing those with an agenda to fill their minds with fear, talking points, and propaganda.

I do have a few questions for those of you who agree with the Right-wing apologist who paid for this sign, though:

  • Where were you when George W. Bush lied and propagandized his way into getting the war in Iraq he so desperately wanted?

  • Where were you when Bush gutted federal regulatory capacity, setting the stage for tragedies like the West Virginia mine disaster, the massive oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, and the subprime mortgage crisis?

  • Where were you when Bush pushed his massive tax cuts through Congress? You remember those, right? Yeah, the tax cuts which turned our budget surplus into the largest deficit in this country’s history? Yeah, those….

  • Where were you when our troops were sent to Iraq insufficiently equipped to face the dangers posed by IEDs? How many of our sons and daughters were shipped home in flag-draped boxes because the Bush Administration treated their lives as disposable commodities?

  • Where were you when Bush was mismanaging the economy in order to benefit wealthy Republican benefactors?

  • Where were you when Bush was presiding over an economy in which the rich got richer and the poor and the middle class were left to fight over the remaining crumbs?

Really, where WERE you? Where was the Tea Party and their astoundingly ignorant, talking-points-fueled impotent rage? George W. Bush and his neoConservative thugs spent eight years running this country and its economy into the ground…and you waited until Barack Obama became President to vent your spleens?? Gee, this wouldn’t have ANYTHING to do with the fact that the President is African-American, would it? No, of course not….

I don’t mind people who disagree with me, because I occasionally learn something and every now and again I’m proven to be something less than correct. What I can’t stand, however, is rampant ignorance and blatant propaganda masquerading as informed discourse. Of course, I’d be well advised to let it go, because this sort of thing is not about to change or go away. The reality is that people with an agenda will run the show, and they’ll scare and propagandize the American Sheeple into thinking that voting Republican is actually voting to protect their interests.

Yes, Virginian; the stupid and the easily influenced will always be among us. Hey, it’s beats thinking, eh??
