It’s been said (usually by me and here in this space) that Americans get exactly the quality of representation they deserve. Using this as a yardstick, the poor folks in Louie Gohmert’s Congressional District must have some SERIOUS issues. I mean, if Gohmert is the best they can do, if they think he’s what they deserve…well, I’m speechless. How could a reasonably lucid individual process the sheer, genuine, unhinged lunacy that is Louie Gohmert? As much as I try to respect those I disagree with, Gohmert does a bang-up job of indicting himself. If he’s not the single dumbest and most seriously unbalanced biped in Congress, I’m not certain I’d want to know who is.

Being elected to Congress could and probably should be taken as indication of the need to conduct yourself with at least a minimum level of gravitas and intellectual integrity. Honestly, though, if brains were dynamite, Louie Gohmert wouldn’t be able to blow his nose. The flip side, though, is that the man’s a comedy gold mine. It’s just too bad that Gohmert doesn’t listen to himself. Perhaps if he did, he might realize what a joke he’s become…or perhaps he does, and this is how he’s decided to maximize the time he can insert himself in front of a camera and an open mike.

Gohmert’s argument about “terror babies”, while beyond laughable, is a sad commentary on the reality that the terrorists really have won. When ideas like “terror babies” are discussed on the floor of the House of Representatives with the same gravity and seriousness as trade policy, there should be no doubt that we’ve lost this battle. Somewhere in a cave in south Waziristan, Osama bin-Laden is snickering into his coffee….
