Better to be thought an intolerant, Jesus-y wingnut than to be Franklin Graham

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Rev. Franklin Graham

One of the more disturbing trends in the public realm these days is that there are far too many people concerned with the flavor of Barack Obama’s religion…as if that makes a bit of difference. The separation of Church and State aside, one’s religious beliefs (or lack of same) are and should remain a private matter…even for a President. The President’s spirituality is not a matter for public debate, nor should it be open to evaluation for appropriateness. (Remember this?: OMG!!! JFK’S A CATHOLIC!?!?!) Frankly, I find this entire topic distasteful and disrespectful. A President may be a public figure, but he is not and should not be an open book, his every word, gesture, and arched eyebrow subject to public dissection and rumination. Then again, when you have a President who so many seem do determined to find a reason to hate….

We now have pundits who are seriously suggesting that perhaps Obama should go to church more often, in order that people would understand that he’s a Christian. Uh…WTF??? In order for Americans to understand that they’re NOT being led by an Islamofascist Kenyan terrorist sympathizer, Barack Obama needs to thump a Bible now and again? How is it that this sort of suggestion isn’t laughed out of the studio? Because far too many talking heads are terrified of, and poisoned by, the Right-wing propaganda being peddled by those who hate. The fact that we have an African-American with a foreign-sounding name in the White House is to these haters an abomination. To make matters worse, we have self-appointed “Christian” “leaders” like Franklin Graham opining on the meaning of Barack Obama’s name…and people like CNN’s John King providing him with a platform. “The seed of Islam” being passed from father to son? As if Islam was some sort of social disease that infected the President prior to birth? Really? This is a matter for serious discussion among serious people?? Have we lost our minds?? Or just our ability to reason?

The fact that Barack Obama has proclaimed himself a Christian seems to mean nothing to those with an axe to grind. That the President seems to see no need to engage in Bible-thumping appears to be a problem for those inclined to judge such things. Then again, you might want to be cognizant of the fact that our last President engaged in more than his fair share of Bible-thumping…and look at the disaster he left behind after The Reign of Error ©.

Far too many, like Graham, are far too concerned with President Obama’s spiritual life…like it’s really any of their damn business. Personally, I don’t care if the President buggers goats while reciting from the Koran and sacrificing virgins in the White House chapel on Sunday mornings. My concern is with his competence and his ability to clean up the mess left behind by The Worst President EVER ©. Since our previous Glorious and Benevolent Leader © spent eight years wrecking the economy and destroying a generation of our armed forces, I want to know that, for this President, Job One is getting this country back on track. Bible-thumping is for those devoid of ideas, and for those unable and/or unwilling to acknowledge and fix what our previous Bible-Thumper-In-Chief spent eight years screwing up.

If Franklin Graham is a Christian, then I’m the Queen of England. Graham’s no better than the Vatican hierarchy who stood mutely by while Adolf Hitler attempted to extinguish the Jewish race. Perhaps if there was even the barest hint of compassion in his judgmental self-righteousness, I might be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. His father was an unrepentant anti-Semite, and it’s clear that this apple hasn’t fallen so very far from that tree. If there’s a Hell, then Franklin Graham has a reserved parking space in the employee parking lot. In that same parking lot would be reserved spaces for those in the Mainstream Media who think it appropriate to dedicate air time to allow Graham to air his noxious, Christian-in-name-only hate speech. Yes, I believe in free speech, but that doesn’t mean that all speech is worthy of public dissemination. If Rev. Graham is worthy of so much free publicity, then why doesn’t Rev. Fred Phelps have his own show on Fox Noise Channel?

WE DESERVE BETTER.
