So...remind me again how marriage is under attack??

The National Organization For Marriage (NOM) has embarked on a disastrous 23-city “Summer for Marriage Tour 2010,” spreading the gospel of one-man-one-woman marriage to tens of supporters and encountering well organized counter protests in almost every city…. Ironically, NOM has been portraying itself as a victim of LGBT activists who claim that the group’s supporters are bigoted or intolerant. During an interview on the Lars Larson show on Thursday — before the Indiana rally — former NOM CEO Maggie Gallagher said she was “really proud of our supporters.” ” If you look at the tape, they remain very peaceful and prayerful and respectful of the law, because that’s who our people are.” LGBT activists “want us treated like racists in the public square and it’s wrong and it should stop.”

One of the things that provides so much grist for my mill is that sad reality that so many on the Right insists on dividing and hating people based on artificial considerations. There are so many people who live in fear and terror of our differences, rather than finding ways to celebrate the things we all share. The issue of same-sex marriage is but the latest example of the “We’re righteous, you’re evil” divisiveness that characterizes so much of our public discourse these days.

You’d think that the holier-than-thou zealots on the Christian Right would be celebrating the fact that so many homosexuals want to marry. When you get right down to it, stable marriages (of whatever flavor) benefit all of us- gay, straight, or somewhere in between. Stable marriages are healthier for those involved, communities enjoy larger and more stable tax bases, and there are a raftload of other benefits that accrues to communities and individuals from the formation and furtherance of stable, long-term committed relationships. That the haters insist on treating homosexuals as second-class citizens less worthy of the legal and other benefits that accrue to heterosexual couples is ludicrous, not least because it works against their own best interests.

Never mind that the idea of lynching gay couples is abhorrent and runs to counter to virtually everything that mainstream Christianity purports to stand for. That anyone could advocate lynching gay couples while at the same time calling themselves “Christian” is so far beyond hypocritical and repulsive that I can’t even begin to wrap my head around it.

Really…why can’t we all just get along? Why can’t we just live and let live? Why must we be so concerned with how others choose to live their lives? Could it be that we’re miserably unhappy with our own lives that we feel the need to force others to share the joy with us?

WE DESERVE BETTER.

Using racism for fun and profit was the previous entry in this blog.

Sadly, I'd never suspected a fellow Twins fan could be so willfully and aggressively stupid is the next entry in this blog.
