Stay classy...or not: The Ballad of Christine O'Donnell

(The new Delaware state song via Dennis O’Neil)

Realizing the “GOP nightmare,” Tea Party favorite Christine O’Donnell (DE) toppled Rep. Mike Castle in Delaware’s Republican Senate primary. In reacting to his stunning loss, Castle chose to call Democratic candidate Chris Coons over O’Donnell last night, and confirmed that he “will not be endorsing” her in the general election.

After watching Christine O’Donnell defeat Mike Castle in Delaware’s GOP primary, I have to ask the question: is winning really worth demonstrating yourself to be a mean-spirited, zealous assclown willing to do, say, and/or imply whatever it takes? Is victory at the cost of demonstrating yourself to be void of anything resembling character or decency really worth it? While I ultimately could care less about anything in Delaware’s GOP, I’m struck by the utter and complete lack of civility that was evident in O’Donnell’s tactics. Castle, by all indications a decent, dedicated, and well-meaning public servant of long standing, deserved better than what he was served by O’Donnell. Nice example of Christ-like behavior from someone who wears her Christianity on her sleeve, eh?

O’Donnell may well have won merely a Pyrrhic victory. Given her tactics, it’s difficult to envision her prevailing over Chris Coons in November, but then who could have foreseen this trashing of decency and democracy? O’Donnell repeatedly questioned Castle’s manhood (“Come one, Mike; put on your man-pants!). O’Donnell repeatedly implied that Castle was gay (I don’t know that Mike Castle is gay. I’m not implying that Mike Castle is gay. I’m not accusing Mike Castle of being gay.”). Perhaps worst of all, O’Donnell accused Castle of having an illicit sexual relationshop with a male aide with absolutely no evidence to back her up. Little by little, O’Donnell, an empty suit, world-class hypocrite, and an intellectual and moral black hole by any measure, was able to cover Castle in enough mud that in the end she looked good by comparison. Combine this with her zealous, judgmental, Old Testament Christianity, and I have only one question for Delaware Republicans:

WHAT?? YOU COULDN’T YOU REMOVE YOUR ANTERIOR FROM YOUR POSTERIOR BEFORE YOU CAST YOUR VOTE?? Then again, if you can’t be bothered to think, if you’re that susceptible to propaganda and innuendo, you’re getting exactly what you deserve.

[W]e took the Bible and prayer out of public schools, now we’re having weekly shootings practically.

O’Donnell has nothing- no record, no plans, no ideas, and no positive message to convey. She’s the candidate the head of the Delaware GOP called “delusional” and said that she “couldn’t be elected dog catcher”. She won by smearing a good man as she smiled her vacant perfect-whit- teeth smile. She’s a miserable excuse for a Republican, and an even worse excuse for a human being. If there is in fact a Hell, she’s in the fast lane on her way there…and I hope she’ll rot there. At best, O’Donnell is dishonest. At worst, O’Donnell is a disingenuous demagogue, a Dominionist theocrat bent on doing whatever it takes seize political power…even if it involves hitching her wagon to a racist Tea Party that cares nothing about truth and democracy. What Would Jesus Do? Whatever it takes to win.

Christine O’Donnell represents everything that’s wrong with modern Christianity and the Tea Party. I believe in karma, and I believe that at some point her mean-spirited demagoguery and intolerance will catch up with her. In the meantime, expect to be treated endless discussions of her stand on masturbation and abstinence from now until Election Day. Combine that with the ever growing list of truly stupid/crazy things O’Donnell has said, and you can bet that Christine O’Donnell will be the gift that keeps on giving. It’s just too bad that she had to lie, cheat, and recklessly impugn a good man’s character in order to win.
