Hating Harry Reid: it's as American as baseball, apple pie, and stripper poles

“[H]atred” is such an awful word — a word I forbid my daughter to use — and yet it sums up exactly why the Senate majority leader may lose to a woman who just last week talked of Sharia law existing in cities in Michigan and Texas. It’s hatred that has brought this neat race, with three days until voting begins, to a place where Angle can win. It is hatred that brought her that $14 million haul. And it is hatred that courses through the American electorate, bringing venomous and vitriolic assaults upon anyone who dares to suggest Obama-Reid-Pelosi is not a three-headed monster.

I can understand a Nevada voter being opposed to Harry Reid because he or she doesn’t like his politics. That sort of thing is as American as, well…apple pie, baseball, and stripper poles. What really chaps me though, is the sheer, abject hatred that’s been spewed in Reid’s direction. If you listen to Sharron Angle, or most any Republican with a stake in the Nevada Senate race, Harry Reid is Evil Incarnate…because he sits at the right hand of Satan. Or because he’s ObamaPelosiReid, that evil Democratic triumvirate that buggers goats and drinks the blood of young virgins. Really…hating Harry Reid? In the personal sense? That’s the best you can do? Blind foaming-at-the-mouth hatred…and for reasons you probably can’t even elucidate, except that it just feels “right”? Really?

The problem with swallowing the Kool-Aid is that it erases any hope of rationality. Hating Harry Reid becomes all-consuming to the point where it’s a matter of faith- hating Harry Reid is just the right and reasonable thing to do…because he’s a Democrat and 1/3 of the unspeakably evil ObamaPelosiReid triumvirate.

An incredible 161,358 people sent her checks of $200 or less. Her average donation is $90, [Angle spokesman Jarrod] Agen says.

This is real, unparalleled (except, perhaps, for Barack Obama in 2008) grass roots. And there is a wildfire blazing through the grass roots, with burning hatred for Reid animating Angle’s chances.

Of those small contributors, my guess is only a handful of the 161,358 people know much about Angle. They have no idea about her religious fervor, fail to separate her church (which apparently doesn’t like Mormons) from our state, or her multifarious positions on Social Security and Medicare, her sympathy for “Second Amendment remedies” or her latest incendiary comments about Dearborn, Mich., and nonexistent Frankford, Texas, implying “the Muslims are coming, the Muslims are coming.”

But they don’t need to know much about Sharron Angle. They know enough about Harry Reid — Obamacare, bailouts, stimulus, good old boy (emphasis on “old”) and part of a corrupt Congress that has bankrupted this country and led it down the inevitable path to socialism.

This is what we’ve come to- a veritable army of haters too intellectually inflexible to think for themselves, so they let the haters on Fox Noise Channel tell them who to hate and how much. I seriously doubt that many of Angle’s 161,358 donors know much of anything about her sheer, unbridled lunacy. What they do know to a certainty is that Fox Noise Channel LOVES Sharron Angle…and so they donate. They neither know nor care what Harry Reid stands for, nor what he’s accomplished during his years in the Senate. They know to a certainty that Fox Noise Channel HATES Harry Reid…and so they donate. Welcome to American Democracy 2010.

The problem with democracy is that it’s predicated on the “wisdom” of the Sheeple- voters who in this case are too lazy and intellectually incurious to do the heavy lifting of learning and evaluating the truth. No, it’s SO much easier letting the talking heads at Fox Noise Channel fill their pointy li’l haids with hatred and propaganda. Why think when you can hate? Hate is certain and final; thinking gives you wrinkles. Hate brooks no grey area; thinking operates best in shades of grey.

This country is on the verge of being run by some phenomenally, unbelievably stupid people voted into office by yet more phenomenally, unbelievably stupid people. Yes, I realize that this probably sounds horribly dismissive of American voters…but I’m willing to listen to you if you think you can convince me that I’m wrong. Just don’t expect me to believe that 161,358 people represent the cream of America’s intellectual crop. If you can donate to Sharron Angle with no sense of irony, you clearly can’t be bothered to pay attention. For the good of all of us, you should probably just go ahead and surrender your voter registration card. NOW, before you do any more damage to our democracy.

Almost every national reporter, as I have said before, wants to know why people “hate” Harry Reid. I always say the same thing: 40 years in politics, familiarity breeds contempt, terrible retail pol, bizarre statements, face of unpopular Democratic agenda. But there’s more to it, as I realized after the $14 million revelation. As a headline on New York magazine’s blog said: “Sharron Angle’s Cash Haul Says Something About America’s State of Mind.”

America’s state of mind? What Angle’s $14 million says is that America is populated by brain-dead zealots who hate whoever their told to hate when they’re told to hate them. They’re easily propagandized, prone to reaction, and unwilling to consider countervailing evidence once their minds have slammed shut, which generally happens early on. Truly, America has become the set of “Idiocracy”. The movie was humorous, but when art imitates life to this degree, it’s truly a terrifying thing to behold. Our future is beholden to the lowest common intellectual denominator and those skilled at manipulating and exploiting them.

This isn’t about me making the case that Democrats represent the only intelligent choice…though if you press me, that’s exactly the argument I’ll make. No, this is about 161,358 sheeple who would donate to a candidate who wishes to drag this country back to the Stone Age. Sharron Angle would be perfectly happy ruling a Dominionist Theocracy where wealthy White Christians control the levers of power and the only law and educational tool available or required is the Bible.

It’s What Jesus Would Do….
