Killing the patient in order to save...their political careers

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Senate Republicans

It’s become fashionable among Republicans to berate Democrats for the sorry state of our economy. I could rhapsodize at length about the REPUBLICAN President whose corrupt ineptitude led this economy to the drain it’s currently circling…but that’s another rant best left for another time. No, my interest today is the hypocrisy that leads Republicans in the Senate to cynically use the down economy as just another tool for advancing their political agenda. When confronted with what should have been the formality of extending a jobs program that provided 250,000 Americans with an income (no small thing in these times), Senate Republicans repeatedly put a hold on the program. This hold prevented the program from coming up for a reauthorization vote- a vote that Republicans would have lost handily…if they’d actually come out against the program, which they never explicitly did.

No, it was simply easier and more expedient to issue holds on the legislation over the course of several months until it expired…and then blame Senate Democrats for a lack of leadership. A reasonable person would have to wonder why and how Senate Republicans could kill a jobs program that has done exactly what it was supposed to…and, relatively speaking, very cost-effectively. Except that…no, not even Republicans could be so cynical, self-absorbed, and obsessed with their political prospects that they would kill a successful, cost-effective jobs program to provide them with a set of talking points…right? Surely not even Republicans would play games with the livelihoods of Americans to advance their agenda…would they??

Sadly, Republicans in the Senate aren’t talking, leaving intelligent observers to draw their own conclusion. Watch the video…and at the end of it, you’ll likely be feeling as I am- Republicans killed this jobs program, idling 250,000 Americans, simply and only to advance their political agenda.

“Despicable” doesn’t begin to describe these sorry excuses for human beings….
