Somewhere between the Apocalypse and a Bacchanal

And we will all bake together when we bake.
There’ll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

— Tom Lehrer, “We Will All Go Together When We Go

Election Day. Depending on your perspective, it’s either the dawn of a new era…or the death of reason and rationality. I myself having been fighting this predilection for hyperbole, perhaps because of the abject ignorance and silliness evidenced by so many candidates. Yes, that these tendencies have been overwhelming characteristics of so many Rabid Right candidates is a sad commentary…but that’s another rant for another time. Today I’m grateful that we, for at least another year or so, will no longer be force-fed propaganda claiming that Candidate X parties with farm animals or Candidate Y is selling this country to Chinese hookers looking for iPads and a little lovin’.

I don’t know what results tonight’s returns will yield. It’s still too early to be weeping, rending our garments, and/or bemoaning the future. There will be plenty of time for that, but I’m going to try to make the best of whatever happens…because, really, what will change if I refuse to accept whatever reality is thrust upon the American body politic tonight?

Politics may be a passion of mine (I know; quelle surprise, eh??), but there’s more to life that obsessing over what random silliness someone plans to inflict on us if elected. I care deeply about the future of this country, which is why I devote so much time, energy, and so many column inches to the subject. Still, even I recognize that too much of a good thing is…well, too much of a good thing. Whatever reality we may wake up to tomorrow morning, I hope against hope that we’ll all recognize that we’re in this together and we’ll need to get through it together.

Then again, I always have been a bleeding-heart idealist, knowhutimean??
