My takeaways from a disappointing Election Night

The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.

  • Winston Churchill

Yeah, so it was a tough night to be a Progressive. To watch my country turn tail and seemingly head back to the bad old days of George W. Bush was a sad thing. Still, there are a few things I took away from this election…though none of these things will likely make a difference to anyone but me. Since this is my sandbox, that’s all that really matters, right?

Right. And so, without further ado….

Why does American Idiot keep running through my brain like Charlie Sheen on a hookers-and-blow bender??

So the House of Representative will be led by a man who by his own admission would cry at a supermarket opening? I don’t know about you, but watching John Boehner cry was one of those moment of cheap, manufactured emotional outbursts that destroys what little credibility he has. Even worse, that he can claim to not be a “professional politician” after 26 years in politics defies rational explanation.

The American Sheeple may be a stupid and intellectually incurious lot, but at least now we know where the bottom of the barrel is. Sharron Angle, a two-legged moral and intellectual black hole, lost to Harry Reid. Finally, proof that there are depths of ignorance, racism, and uber-Jesus-y nuttiness to which not even the American Sheeple will descend to.

I’m still trying to figure out who hypnotized veteran baby-farmer Michele Bachmann (R-MN). Whenever Chris Matthews asked her a question, she had the same answer and the same “I’m-really-high-on-Vicodin” smile plastered on her face. Frankly, it was pretty frightening stuff…and I’m wondering if Minnesotans know how heavily medicated their Congresswoman is? Of course, they did re-elect her…and I grew up in her district. Nice.

You have to know that this country is in serious trouble when the most cogent and sensible analysis of Clusterf—k 2010 © was provided by The Daily Show.

There’s at least something positive to emerge from the carnage of Republican propaganda and Democratic wussiness: pictures of Fergie with no pants. Consider it a public service.

In additional good news, we’re virtually guaranteed at least another two years of Newt Gingrich comparing modern-day American to Communist Poland…or, How I Learned To Stop Fearing The Hammer-And-Sickle And Love Lech Walesa.

Thankfully, my few remaining functional brain cells will no longer be subjected to the silliness and propaganda of political ads…at least for a few weeks, until the 2012 election silliness begins to ramp up.

Someone really ought to tell the American Sheeple that “change” is not instantaneous, and that there’s no quick fix. You simply cannot expect that the damage done by eight years of incompetence, venality, and corruption could be rectified in two short years. Yet that seems to be exactly what Americans were expecting. Is it just me, or are we a phenomenally impatient and stupid lot who refuse to take responsibility for the mess that WE created??

From the perspective of actually getting anything done in the next two years, there was perhaps no worse outcome. Republicans don’t fully control Congress, so they don’t have enough power to be blamed for legislative outcomes. But Democrats don’t control the House and they don’t have a near-filibuster proof majority in the Senate, so they can’t pass legislation. Republicans, in other words, are not left with the burden of governance, and Democrats are not left with the power to govern. Republicans don’t have to be responsible, and Democrats can’t do it for them.

I’m not quite sure how to break it to y’all, but “Throw the bums out!!” is a damned poor way to run a democracy.

So…I’m wondering how long it will take Republicans in the House to attempt to impeach Barack Obama? Now that Darrell Issa has subpoena power…well, let the witch hunts commence!!

It’s going to be interesting to see how Republicans will spin the next two years, which is virtually guaranteed to be nothing but various flavors of gridlock, obstruction, and obfuscation. We progress the most when we do the least? Or how about Poverty is God’s way of weeding out the weak and lazy? Or maybe Debtor’s prisons: an idea whose time has come? It’s still early, and I imagine the GOP’s best efforts are yet to come.

Party on….
