We're from the government, and we're here to...oh, never mind

Perhaps it’s the economy. Perhaps there’s something in the water. Or maybe we really are losing our collective mind. Whatever may be happening, it’s a difficult thing for me to understand. Silly me; I’d always thought that the job of government was to serve and support taxpayers. Yeah, right….

Welcome to the New Republican World Order, where the job of government is apparently to exclude, disenfranchise, and deny services to as many people as possible. Right…because only freeloaders expect to get something for their tax dollars, eh??

Perhaps the proper role of government really is installing and preserving the narrow agenda of wealthy, well-fed, Socially Conservative White males….

Missouri Lawmaker Pushes Bill Rolling Back Child Labor Laws. What good is having children if you can’t exploit them as a convenient source of cheap labor??

Michele Bachmann blasts first lady over breast-feeding. If we’re spending tax dollars on helping poor women breastfeed their snot-nosed kids, how are we going to have enough money for the war against radical Islamofascism and enforcing mandatory prayer in public schools?

Next up for S. Dakota: Sharia Law bill. Because Americans won’t be truly free until Christianity becomes mandatory and exclusive.

The South Dakota Bill That Could Legitimize Murder of Abortion Providers. If “justifiable homicide” can be applied to abortion providers, how long will it be until that “privilege” is extended to those with a beef against Liberals, the poor, non-Christians, and immigrants?

Republican Officials Cut Head Start Funding, Saying Women Should Be Married And Home With Kids. When will women finally come to understand that “barefoot and pregnant” isn’t just a job description. It’s their lot in life.

“This is making us into a police state that will try to catch people when they are sick”. Arizona: Land of the Free, Home of The White…and God help you if you’re not White and you happen to fall ill.

AZ Immigration Guru Targets “Anchor” Babies. Conservatives LOVE the Constitution…except when it doesn’t serve their agenda, at which point it’s just so much paper.

Who wants a government shutdown? Everybody!. Because the sooner we can shut the government down, the sooner we can get serious about cutting spending. Now where’s my g——-n Social Security check??

Wisconsin Gov. Walker Reiterates That The ‘National Guard’ Will Be Used Against A Worker ‘Walk-Off’. Because, really…what are government workers but overhead? The sooner we put those shiftless, unmotivated ingrates in their place, the better. Now where’s my g——-n unemployment check??

The GOPs Abortion Siege. Isn’t it about time that women were disabused of the silly notion that they should be allowed to control their own bodies??

Enough with the budget baloney!. Why work to fix budget problems when it’s just SO much easier to demonize unions and public employees??

Kansas NAACP: Kobach’s voter ID bill is so much more than that. You live in Kansas. You’re poor. You’re not White. And you want to vote. Good luck with that….

There’s a certain tongue-in-cheek element to the above, but if I could be serious for a moment, I’ll admit that all of this scares the Hell out of me. In an era when we have real, significant, and intractable problems facing us, Republicans are whistling past the graveyard as they pander to their Social Conservative base. Then again, enslaving women and disenfranchising non-Christians certainly is a helluva lot easier than actually doing something about the very real problems this country faces, eh?

And so Nero fiddled while Rome burned around him….
