What about the poor, innocent Buffalo wings??

(Reuters) - An extended NFL lockout would be devastating to the chicken wing industry, which has already seen prices drop precipitously this year, the chief executive of Sanderson Farms Inc (SAFM.O) said…. “It would kill wings, it would be terrible on wings,” Joe Sanderson said at the Reuters Global Food and Agriculture Summit on Monday…. Wholesale chicken wing prices generally run up in the weeks ahead of the league’s Super Bowl each February. This year, however, prices have been pressured by too many chickens on the lots. Wholesale prices for chicken wings in Georgia were $1.04 per pound just ahead of this year’s big game, down from $1.74 per pound a year earlier. This week, wing prices plunged to 95 cents per pound, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.

I know; it’s the age-old struggle of millionaires vs. billionaires, and in a down economy when people are legitimately suffering…well, who really cares, right? Except that, as if to prove that things in this world really ARE interconnected, no NFL football this fall might adversely impact the chicken wing industry. Sure, we all know the drill from the last lockout in 1987, right? Stadium and concession workers, along with lower-paid front office personnel and businesses (restaurants and bars) with ancillary connections to NFL teams, will bethe ones hurt by the loss of NFL football. None of the owners or players will be reduced to wondering where their next Big Mac will be coming from. The ripple effect from losing all or part of the 2011 NFL season would likely be widespread. For my money, though, nowhere will the impact be felt more than when it comes time to procure the Buffalo wings. I had no idea that Super Bowl Sunday was to the chicken industry was Christmas is to the American retail sector. No Super Bowl, no traditional Super Bowl food, eh?

Man, maybe I should be clearing some space in my freezer and begin stocking up for the coming Apocalypse….
