When it comes to racism, there's only one acceptable response

I’m somewhat disturbed by the woman who says she has “mixed emotions” about the Klan canvassing her town. Mixed emotions? It also seems odd that the police chief and the mayor refused to comment for the story - here’s a comment: We abhor them and wish they would go away. How hard is that?

Agreed- “We abhor them and wish they would go away.” Time was when African-Americans were slaves and legally considered only 3/5 of a person. It’s unthinkable that we could return to that sort of race-based oppression, and yet there’s still, to this day, a population of people who fervently believe that White Makes Right. The idea that the White race is the Master Race, ordained by God and history, is neither new nor original, and it’s as odious and objectionable today as ever. As if life isn’t difficult enough these days, now we find ourselves having to deal with a group (albeit a small one, thankfully) which believes that the path to solving our problems begins with dividing us even further.

As long as skin colors and cultures differ, there will be those among us ready, willing, and able to sow dissension that highlights our differences and exalts one group over another based on an artificial construct such as skin color. Yet, if you cut a White person and do the same to a Black person, you’ll find that they both bleed the same color blood in the same way.

I’d hoped that by now we could and would have moved past the idea that White Makes Right. We’re all Americans; we all have dreams and aspirations that have nothing to do with skin color. Here in the 21st century, we should be able to pull together…because the problems we face today impact all of us regardless of the color of our skin. WE DESERVE BETTER.

Racism, regardless of shape, manner, or form, should be something that good and decent people reject without hesitation. When it comes to racism and racists, there’s only one acceptable response: “We abhor them and wish they would go away.”
