This could probably be filed under “housekeeping”, but you may have noticed that the comments look a wee bit different. WWJD, for reasons I can’t even begin to comprehend, has historically been a target for comment spammers. Man , I had NO idea that so many people out there could be selling things to enlarge my penis to the size of a field hockey stick….but I digress….
Recently, the problem has become significantly worse. I’ve been getting hit by upwards of 400-500 spam comments per day. Yes, it’s annoying, and the people responsible are pond scum. Not only was this annoying, it was causing my hosting service to shut off the comment script altogether because of the load being placed on their server. A few days ago, they threatened to shut down WWJD altogether. OK, so they weren’t spectacularly helpful..but when you pay $9.95/month for someone to host your website, you can’t really complain when they don’t exactly go the extra mile for you, right? Anyway, I’m veering off-topic again….
So, long story short, James Bow (yes, I’ve “off-shored” my “IT department” to Canada) has once again ridden to my rescue. By moving the comments to Disqus and off my hosting service’s server, I will (hopefully) avoid having to move WWJD to yet another host.
Not that any of y’all should care about any of this, of course, but running a blog is not always the glamorous undertaking you’re probably thinking it is. I’m fortunate that James has seen fit to handle the IT aspect of WWJD, because, left to my own devices, I couldn’t code my way out of a wet paper sack. For reasons I still don’t fully understand (but am beyond grateful for), James has taken it upon himself to volunteer his time and expertise in order to keep my dark little corner of da Interwebs up and running. At the very least, I owe him a few cases of Molson….
