There are many people, places, and things in this country that really, REALLY suck. It’s difficult to say exactly why something sucks; it might be offensive, ignorant, poorly made, or just your basic complete waste of time, effort, and energy. There’s Glenn Beck, Verizon, the Green Bay Packers, Megyn Kelly, Michael Savage…the list goes on forever and the party never ends (apologies to Robert Earl Keen).
Still, there’s a difference between sucking and truly being a pariah. Being a pariah generally means being something or someone so offensive, so distasteful, and so thoroughly without redeeming value that decent people can, should, and do shun the pariah in question. There’s no doubt that the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, KS- Rev. Fred Phelps’ merry band of inbreds- is a world-class example of a pariah. How bad, how thoroughly offensive and devoid of any redeeming value are the WBC trolls? Well, how about bad enough that not even the KKK wishes to be associated with them- in ANY shape, manner or form? Yes, when you’re denounced by the Klan hierarchy for being a disgustingly hateful group of pinheads with a penchant for pouring salt into the wounds of grieving families, you have to know that you’re doing something wrong.
Yeah, when the KKK is reduced to calling the WBC trolls “Progressive Socialists”, you just have to laugh. When haters hate other haters for hating whomever they hate incorrectly…well, either Hell just froze over or winged pigs are violating Saudi Arabian air space as we speak.
Sometimes, I think that if the Westboro Baptist Church didn’t actually exist, I’d have to invent it just to entertain myself. And the KKK? Well, unfortunately those unreconstructed racists are completely devoid of anything resembling a sense of humor…never mind simple human decency. When you’re reduced to trying to make yourself seem more acceptable by denouncing an almost equally repulsive collection of human flotsam…well, the odds are pretty good that you’re still not going to be universally loved. Then again, what do I know? I’m just a lonely, unemployed blogger with more time on my hands than sense….
