Welcome to Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.
- Garrison Keillor
This past Saturday night, the Minnesota House of Representatives voted, by a 70-62 margin, to put a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the November, 2012 ballot. That any state would take such a step is reprehensible on it’s face. That my home state would do it saddens me beyond measure.
I was born in Chicago, but my family moved to northern Minnesota when I was turn. When I was 16, we moved to St. Cloud in central Minnesota, and I went to college in St. Paul. I moved here to Portland when I was 23, and while I’ve only returned very infrequently, I’m still proud to be from Minnesota. At this point in my life, though, I feel that the Minnesota I so fondly remember exists only in my memory.
