Sure, they SAY he's dead, but....

The free world, particularly the United States, has a right to make sure Osama bin Laden is really dead. Every American has a right to walk right up to bin Laden’s corpse and view it. We are entitled to know for a fact that the witch is dead. No shroud for dignity’s sake, please - bin Laden’s naked, bullet-riddled corpse should be put on display in lower Manhattan for all the world to see. The entire body should be digitally scanned, inside and out - and made available for everyone to take his or her own picture.

One of the interesting aspects among the myriad reactions to the killing of Osama bin-Laden is that there’s a small but vocal minority who refuse to credit President Obama for ANYTHING positive. Bin-Laden was positively and undeniably identified by DNA evidence using DNA from his dead sister’s brain. Even so, there are those who refuse to believe any assertion that doesn’t end with bin-Laden’s naked, bullet-riddled corpse laid out in Times Square for Americans to gawk at. Lost on these folks is the sheer barbarism that would be involved in doing what they demand. Must we really resort to displaying our kill in public in order for a minority of Doubting Thomases to finally believe? So bin-Laden is now sleeping with the fishes; does that really even matter?

I understand the bloodlust resulting from the news of the death of bin-Laden. Giving the horrific nature of 9.11, I suppose the reaction is natural. After all, Osama bin-Laden was the very public face of an organization that killed more than 3000 Americans, brought down four airplanes, destroyed New York’s Twin Towers, and damaged the Pentagon. This is not your common, garden-variety, walk-into-a-pizzeria-wearing-an-explosive-vest kind of terrorist. The enmity and desire for vengeance directed at bin-Laden was understandable given the scope of the evil he visited upon this country. Can we not just accept that the man’s dead, though? Must we string up his limp corpse in the village square in order to remove any possible lingering doubt. Are we still so distrustful of our government that we could see in this news the hand of some sort of high-level conspiracy?

Of course, there are still those among us who’ve managed to convince themselves that 9.11 was an inside job…never mind the sheer absurdity inherent in that belief. There are those among us who are convinced that bin-Laden has been dead for awhile, and that President Obama timed the announcement for maximum political impact. There are also those among us who, if President Obama told the nation that his favorite flavor was strawberry, would be wailing and wondering why the President hates chocolate. Why so many are so invested in hating all things Obama is beyond me, but that’s their loss. They can stew in their ignorance and delusion for all I care.

Osama bin-Laden is dead. How about we just accept it, celebrate in whatever manner or fashion seems appropriate, and then get on with our lives?

And here’s yet another idea: can wee pleez haz wifdrawal frum Afghanistan??
