Here's the thing about religious extremism, intimidation, and murder: it works

It was two years ago that Dr. George Tiller was murdered by Scott Roeder in the vestibule of Tiller’s church. Outside of the obvious and undeniable tragedy of Tiller’s cold-blooded execution, the even larger tragedy is what Scott Roeder has wrought. The goal of the anti-choice extremists all along was to silence Tiller and intimidate Wichita into becoming an environment unfriendly to a woman’s access to safe, LEGAL abortion services.

Mission accomplished.

Over the past two years, Operation Rescue and their merry band of above-the-law zealots have, through an organized and very public intimidation campaign, have denied women in Wichita a right guaranteed by Roe v. Wade. To say that the anti-choice zealots consider themselves to be above the law wouldn’t begin to do justice to their arrogance and smug self-superiority.

Anyone who’s followed this debate over the years understands that the rabid, anti-choice zealots long ago gave up on the idea of a full-frontal assault on Roe v. Wade. Instead, they’ve nibbled away at the margins. Virtually every nuisance law passed by red-state legislatures regarding abortion is unconstitutional, but until someone take the matter to the Supreme Court, who’s going to stop them? And if someone did takes it to the Supreme Court, the zealots are confident that the Conservative George W. Bush majority will overturn Roe V. Wade.

Stare decisis, my ass….

What we have here is a blueprint for how the Rabid Right plans to remake America into a country defined by their narrow, hateful agenda. Once they finish with abortion, who knows what they’ll focus on next? If you think they’re going to rest on their laurels once they’ve destroy a woman’s right to an abortion, you’re in for one helluva surprise.

So much for the rule of law.
