Memo to Fred Phelps: Foo you.... ;-)

MY NEW HERO

Foo Fighters

Holding anger is a poison. It eats you from the inside. We think that hating is a weapon that attacks the person who harmed us. But hatred is a curved blade. And the harms we do, we do to ourselves.

That the phony inbred haters from the Westboro Baptist Church are Christians in the same way Jeffrey Dahmer was a vegetarian goes without saying. That they get way too much attention hardly breaks new ground, either. I’d long since resolved to ignore the faux “Christians” from WBC…but every now and again someone comes up with a new and novel way to hold a mirror up to the zealots and embarrass them even more than they already and frequently embarrass themselves.

In Kansas CIty to play a concert at the Sprint Center, the Foo Fighters decided to prank the WBC zealots who were there to protest their performance (Is there anything these idjits WON’T protest??). Having a few hours to kill before the show, the band put on costumes and fake beards, rolled up across the street from the WBC zealots on a flatbed truck, and played “Keep It Clean (Hot Buns)”. Listen to the video, and you’ll understand that the song is exactly the sort of thing the WBC zealots HATE…which made it all the more fun.

No, the band’s impromptu performance didn’t win over any of the haters, but that really wasn’t the point of the exercise. As an exercise in exposing the silliness and ugliness of the haters, I’d say it worked pretty well. Sometimes that’s the best you can hope for.

It can be difficult not to despise the WBC zealots for their intolerance and bigotry. Then again, you’d have to say that the haters are living proof of the reality that hatred ultimately really only hurts the one doing the hating. Yeah, we could hate those who so casually and despicably act in the name of Jesus Christ, whose teachings they clearly have no understanding of. It would mean nothing to them, though, and the hate would do us harm. No, it seems much more productive- and accurate- to simply pity the fools. They’re the ones whose hearts have been blackened.
