A tyrant's dead. So what? Remember, people...Job One is making sure this President fails.

What the fuck is wrong with you people?…Is there no Republican who can be gracious and statesmanlike in this situation? We removed a dictator in six months, losing no American soldiers, spending, like, a billion dollars rather than a trillion dollars, and engendering what appears to be good will in a people who now have a prideful story of their own independence to tell (not to mention oil, they have oil). Anybody want to give credit?

  • Jon Stewart

To rid the world of Osama bin Laden, Anwar al-Awlaki and Moammar Qaddafi within six months: if Obama were a Republican, he’d be on Mount Rushmore by now.

  • Andrew Sullivan

So Muammar Gadhafi (or however you spell his name) is dead, finally brought to something resembling justice after a brutal 42-year reign of terror that turned Libya into an international laughing stock and sponsor of terrorism….

Whatever side of the ideological fence you happen to call home, it’s difficult to imagine that any American with a brain is mourning the passing of the Libyan dictator. The good news is that America’s support of the Libyan rebels came at the cost of NOT A SINGLE AMERICAN LIFE. Yes, it cost us money, but sometimes doing the right thing ain’t cheap, knowhutimean? In this case, we supported those fighting for freedom in Libya and it didn’t require any American casualties. A “win-win” right? Something that America should be proud of, right? Something that President Obama should reasonably be credited for…right?

Except that if you listen, what you hear coming from the Right is…crickets. While Republicans and Right-wing pundits fell all over themselves congratulating the French and the British for “leading”, nary a word in praise of President Obama escaped anyone’s lips. The party line, as elucidated by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), is that Job One is ensuring Barack Obama is a one-term President. This is why Republicans and Right-wing pundits would sooner use their lips to walk across a floor strewn with broken glass than utter anything that might be even vaguely construed as praise for the President.

Remember, it’s not about doing what’s best for America…or even doing the right thing. It’s about power. It’s about doing whatever it takes to ensure that a Republican takes the oath of office on the Capitol steps in January, 2013. If America has to burn for that to happen, if it means refusing to acknowledge ANYTHING positive done by this President…well, that’s the cost of doing business.

The road to Hell really IS paved with Republicans….
