Better to be thought a fool and a dick than to be than to be Eric Bolling and remove all lingering doubt

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Eric Bolling

Fox News host Eric Bolling found a new way to mock the Occupy Wall Street protesters on Friday’s episode of “The Five.”…. Bolling wore a tin-foil hat and nerdy glasses, and held a sign reading “Occupy The Five.” The gesture seemed to go down well with most of Bolling’s colleagues, who chortled appreciatively at his lampoonery and played video of what they felt were stupid protesters in the movement. Co-host Andrea Tantaros chimed in, saying that the protesters never brushed their teeth. Greg Gutfeld added that he didn’t see any point to Occupy Wall Street. Co-host Bob Beckel was not so amused, though, telling Bolling he should be “embarrassed” for his family.

I can understand that some folks might find common cause with the Occupy Wall Street movement. Where some people see young people standing up and screaming, “WE’RE MAD AS HELL AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!”, others might just see a group of clueless kids out to blow things up. Fair enough. Differences of opinion and the debate it creates are part and parcel of American democracy, and one person’s protest is another’s disrespectful disobedience.

OK, so with those preliminaries out of the way, I can’t for the life of me understand why so many on the Far Right think that ridiculing Occupy Wall Street in any way invalidates the movement. When you’re reduced to making fun of the appearance, attire, or hygiene of protesters, all you’ve really done is demonstrate that you have no coherent or credible argument. Eric Bolling is certainly free to disagree with the goals of the protesters. He may despise their methods and agenda, but when he dons a tinfoil hat and engages in ridicule, all he’s done is prove himself to be the fool. Clearly, Bolling has no coherent argument to present; why else would he engage in such ignorant, self-righteous disrespect of those who are actually trying to do something constructive.

Better to be thought a fool….

It would be one thing if Bolling was the only Fox Noise Channel talking head to engage in such silliness, but he’s just one of several. Evidently, those at FNC who disagree with Occupy Wall Street can’t be bothered to actually come up with a coherent argument against the movement; they just figure it’s easier to ridicule what to them are a bunch of clueless kids looking to get laid. Except that those same “clueless kids” have spawned a movement that’s spread not only nationwide, but around the world.

Clueless? Yeah, that would be the idjit in the tin foil hat….

Bolling has the right to disagree with the objectives and methods of Occupy Wall Street; that’s his prerogative in a free society. That said, shouldn’t we be able to expect better from a “news” organization whose catchphrase is “Fair and Balanced”? Would it be too much to hope that a “journalist” could elucidate why he feels Occupy Wall Street is so misguided? Then again, ridicule is WAY less work, and Fox Noise Channel’s talking heads are nothing if not lazy and self-important.

Memo to Eric Bolling: If you’re going to accuse others of being clowns, you might want to take a good long look in the mirror before heading down that road. Just sayin’….
