In the interest of full disclosure, I’ll admit to not being a Republican. I’d sooner have a frontal lobotomy sans anesthetic than vote Republican. No surprise there, eh? Having owned up to my bias, I really don’t much care if Mitt Romney is the GOP nominee in 2012. It could be a ham sandwich for all I care.
What I do care about is seeing a man running for President who refuses to take a position on an issue until he determines which way the wind is blowing. Think about it….
Romney was pro-choice before he discovered that the shelf life of a pro-Choice Republican is so short as to be nonexistent.
When Romney was Governor of Massachusetts he proudly presided over the creation of a statewide universal healthcare system. Then he had his “come to Grover Norquist” moment, which convinced him that universal healthcare is little more than an evil Socialist plot which would metaphorically place government jackboots on the necks of Americans.
Romney was convinced that global climate change was a mankind-created phenomenon…before he learned that there’s no such thing as a “Green” Republican. Now he professes not to know what causes global climate change.
I could go on, but you get the point, right? And surely I’m not the only one who finds Romney’s harsh critiques of Barack Obama to be laughable to the point of absurdity. Criticism from a man with no discernible moral or ideological center is nothing if not hollow. Then again, it’s not as if Romney isn’t trying to fill some sizable shoes. The GOP’s 2008 nominee, John McCain, demonstrated time and again that he would do or say ANYTHING that he felt would further the cause of putting John McCain in the White House. Pinning down McCain’s stance on most any issue was not unlike playing a game of “Ideological Whack-a-Mole.” If Republicans don’t learn from history, and there’s no reason to believe that they will, they’ll have another iteration of a Conservative In Name Only on their hands.
A very wise man once told me that if you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything. What he forgot to include was, “and you’ll make a great Republican Presidential nominee.”
